does this one have this problem?
I didn't give it a shot out of the L5, but I can't imagine their engineering got much worse with their newest DAP.
The way I use it - turn the level all the way down on both the source unit and attenuator, plug them together, then IEMs into attenuator, power up, then slowly turn up the attenuator until I start to hear hiss, then back it down. Now use the volume control on the source as intended (and you'll notice it's not nearly as "touchy" now).
It's discontinued, unfortunately, but may give you an idea of something similar (at Radio Shack?) that will help: http://smile.amazon.com/Shure-EA650-Isolating-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B000GTBDBA/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt (It apparently can still be obtained as part as an airline adapter kit for a few more bucks, but I'm certain there are similar products that would suit this purpose and perhaps have a more secure level control)
FWIW: Using this to match Shure SE530's to a Lyr 1 with stock JJ's is extremely listenable to give an idea of the matching ability. Otherwise you'd hear a snake factory before even putting the IEMs in ;)
