Dumb question, how does it know the difference between being turned off versus a power failure???

roissyWhen it's unplugged or turned off it sees an open circuit, when it's plugged in and turned on it sees the impedance of the wiring and other loads on the circuit.
So I imagine it's very finicky and only works in certain configurations. I'll probably take one apart first thing.

awkThanks, I was thinking too much about it... Missed the drop, will probably pick it up next time it comes around... (although a pack of four would be a better fit.)

roissyActually, doesn’t the use of the light outside of a powered socket require the power cap? As a result, when used in a socket, and the light is turned OFF, the bulb shouldn’t stay on. Right? 🤔

glennacThey say the bulb knows the difference between being turned off, and a power failure. Sounds like magic, but that's what I wanted to know too. Here is the text from the instruction sheet referenced in a link given below: 1.  Screw your LyfeLite bulbs into any lamp or light fixture.  2.  Turn the lamp or light fixture ON just as you normally would.  3.  Leave the lamp or light fixture ON for 8 hours to fully charge the  battery. The battery can be charged hundreds of times after being  used with power outages.  4.  For best results DO NOT mix LyfeLite bulbs with other types of  bulbs in the same light fixture.  They might not work properly  together causing the LyfeLite bulbs to remain on even when you  turn the light switch off.     While your LyfeLite bulbs are in use, you are charging the internal battery that will act  as a power source the next time you have a power outage. During a power outage,  our revolutionary emergency lighting lasts up to 8 hours, and you can still control your  LyfeLite bulbs by using your light switch to turn them on and off. Very simple, but  extremely reliable and convenient!      As an added convenience, we have included 2 Power Caps with every 4-Pack of  LyfeLite bulbs. To use them, just screw the Power Cap onto the bottom of your charged  LyfeLite bulb and hang it anywhere you need additional light. You can turn your  LyfeLite bulb on and off by pressing the button on the bottom of the Power Cap. Please,  don’t forget to recharge the bulbs after use.     Here are some important details about the Smart Chip inside of your LyfeLite bulbs:     The Smart Chip detects a power outage as soon as it occurs and activates  your LyfeLite bulb’s battery to provide up to 8 hours of emergency light.     The Smart Chip protects the LyfeLite bulb’s battery and prevents it from  overheating or overcharging.     The Smart Chip can also tell the difference between a power outage, and  when you turn your light switch off or unplug your light fixture. This  allows you to use your LyfeLite bulbs just like standard bulbs, even  during a power outage.
