hopefully this isn't a dumb question, but do these need an amp to sound optimal? or are they perfectly fine with an ipad, etc
They are really, really good out of everything I have tried.
Honestly, people on headfi are raving about them. I have not seen a single complaint or anyone who thinks they are not worth their asking price so far. They might be slightly better out of my Schiit stack, but honestly they sound amazing out of my phone or Kindle too.
I have had some issues with some bad sources like a laptop or game console output or a friend's phone where even my mediocre FiiO E17 improved clarity and FR, but no issues with others. I would point my finger at source high output impedance + passive crossover + multi drivers but I have limited evidence.. If you do have an amp and suspect issue, just try comparing the output of your device to that with the amp acting as a unity-gain buffer amplifier and see if the sound is any cleaner.
