Product Description
It’s obvious where the Makara Sea Turtle II gets its name: with its thick, almost-armored shell-like case, the watch looks like something you might find swimming alongside you off the coast of Mexico. You certainly could wear it on a dive, too: water resistant to 300 meters, the Sea Turtle II is built for slippery conditions Read More

Anyone thinking of getting a strap to replace the black rubber one? I'm debating if I want to order on now, or wait until I have the watch in my possession to see what would look best

I really like it! It looks like the thread colour is a really good match to the bronze. And that buckle being so angular is a great match to the case design. I want that buckle! I haven't settled yet, but have a few more tries to share. I have modified a few of the straps and components with many of these different versions I have shown so far. The last one is my current favourite with the leather being an interesting match to the case colour, and I re-stitched it with white and orange thread. For now... :)

Hmm...lot of whining whiners seem to have gotten up early this morning for this drop? And no damn shortage of crying cry babies either, I note, particularly young @pjacks10 (who pisses and moans about Makara's customer service, but doesn't quite come out and say he actually owns their watch) and then there's the oh so tragic tale of woe from poor Michael, aka @Pseudonyne, who evidently pestered Makara with frequent complaints about his allegedly defective crown threads, and never heard back from them? How positively scandalous! Well, there's an old cliche that goes: "Your mileage my vary" right? Or as my dear, departed grandmother used to say: "two fucking snowflakes don't make a god damned blizzard!" Case in point: I have the same damn watch, I like it plenty, haven't had any problems with it, and I just ordered a second one the other day! So what do you malcontents have to say about that? Here's the deal: you pay your money, you spin the big wheel, and you take your chances--it's always going to be a gamble with this, and every other, so-called micro-brand watch company. Micro-brand is another word for some guy who scraped together a few grand and found two brothers in China who run a small family watch factory who agreed to build a few watches, using third-party movements, as cheaply as they could to maximize their profits, and the profits of the guy who runs the micro-brand watch company, which really consists of a guy with a website and a checkbook. That's just the way it is--nobody is out to screw anybody, but shit does happen. And don't forget, those two brothers in China are doing the same damn thing for two-dozen other guys with a computer and a checkbook, and everybody wants their stuff shipped first, and the two brothers are most likely doing the best they can but they're competing with a few hundred other brothers in China--all willing to cut the other guy's throat for fifty-cents more margin. So, best intentions aside, now and then a lemon of a watch gets by and you may be the kid who ends up with it. You're supposed to be smart enough to figure all that out up front, and calculate the odds accordingly--always remembering the first rule of ordering inexpensive watches from a no-name company, nobody ever heard of: never wager more than you're willing to loose. Now I don't know the guy who runs Makara, but I don't think he's out to shaft anybody either--he's trying to run a small business, make a living, and most importantly--pay for all those damn tattoos he put on his AmEx card that night he got shit-faced, before the damn bill hits. I'm guessing he'd make good on the watches that slipped by the two brothers in China and pissed off Ike and Mike down below--but he's not necessarily under any obligation to do so--that's part of the gamble too! If he does, people will say nice things about him, if he doesn't, people will talk bad about him on MD--it's his choice. Your choice is to thoughtfully decide who you wanna buy a watch from, and what reasonable expectations you should have after doing so. Makara ain't exactly part of the Swatch Group--they haven't been in business for a hundred years and they're not selling finely crafted watches built by a bunch of Swiss guys in a clean room. I knew that when I bought mine, and when I ordered the second one from Makara's website. By the way, that second watch isn't due until December, and Makara has already dinged my card for the cost (can't recall how much at the moment) but in theory, if Makara closes shop and disappears between now and then, I'm out the dough they charged me. But I knew all that before I ordered it, and if the worst happens, I'll be pretty damned disappointed--but more in myself, than in Makara, 'cuz I'm the guy who placed the bet, knowing in advance, all the stuff I just mentioned. There are no sure bets in horse racing either, by the way, but if I was looking to limit my risk as far as absolutely humanly possible, I'd buy a damn Seiko from Amazon with a credit card that offered buyer protection! That way I'd be covered six-ways from Sunday, no matter what the hell happened, right? Seiko is the low-risk, smart money bet. Makara is the high-risk, long shot horse in the race. Place your bets accordingly, but if you loose please--be a damn man about it! And while you're at it, remember bronze is a relatively soft alloy and if you don't know what you're doing, or you're just not paying close attention, it's fairly easy to inadvertently cross thread the damn crown when you're screw'n it back in. And that would be your issue, wouldn't it?

OMG--it's that watch everyone loves to hate! Except me; I like 'em just fine. Actually bought the bronze version the first time it dropped here and recently preordered the latest version, (the Sea Serpent) on Makara's site, which is due to ship in December. The two offered on this drop are the original Sea Turtle II's (like mine). Evidently the Bronze sold out (no surprise) and all we have left are the Steel and Black PVD. So let me say this about that... This version, the Sea Turtle II, in black or steel, is currently priced at $395 on Markara's site right now (remember these are LEs--when they're gone, they're gone, and yes, bronze is sold out there too), so MD's price of $189 is a great deal. As to the colors offered here (meaning more specifically, the absence of the Bronze model), I like the bronze, but I will say straight up, the stainless steel version is better looking--and that's the color I chose when I ordered the newer Sea Serpent. If you're bummed out the bronze isn't available on this drop, I wouldn't let that prevent you from grabbing the steel (or the black PVD) version--I think you'll like either one just as well, and in the long run, maybe end up with the better looking Makara. As a matter of fact, had I not already ordered the Sea Serpent, I would definitely order one of these right now, in Stainless Steel! So, assuming this watch does appeal to you, for $189 you get a very unique looking diver with a great movement (Seiko NH35), a killer double domed Sapphire crystal (like nothing you've seen before), and a thick rubber strap that's probably tougher than your best leather belt. On the other hand, if I can't talk you into the steel or black case, and you insist on BRONZE, you'll have to head over to Makara's site and fork over $349 for the Sea Serpent--comes with a black or navy dial this time around. https://www.makarawatches.com/pages/sea-serpent-preorder But if you want to torture yourself and be miserable all day because you can't buy the bronze on this drop, here are some shots of mine to help you:

Side note: I never really wanted any of my bronze watches to turn completely green/bronze with the patina you might see on an old cast-off propeller in a marine salvage yard. I know some guys do, but I like 'em kind of bright and I use two things to keep 'em that way: Never Dull wadding polish (keeps the patina, but shines it up), and to really brighten up the color, a dab of Bar Keeper's Friend applied lightly with wet finger. If you want to go the heavy patina route, I've read that Pickle Juice works!

I got my turtle 2 after an 8 month wait and I cant fault it other than the crown has a tendency to move the hands when you press it back in but that's easy to prevent after you do it a couple of times. Other than that it's a bargain for a bold and unique design and bronze case. I paid $200 pre order so same price as here. I just hope they don't let timescales slip with mass drop. It took 8 months to arrive and the target was 4 months. My wrist it 7.25" and it wears comfortably.

I purchased the first Makara Sea Turtle on Massdrop and it was defective and didn't work right out of the box. I sent Makara an e-mail and someone wrote back that I would receive a repair ticket. Well I never rec'd a ticket number and never received another reply from them after I sent 6 or 7 more e-mails. There are better alternatives out there. I wouldn't touch one of their watches even for $5.

The case is probably a bit too cartoonishly rugged for me, but the design is successful because this watch virtually begs to have the crap beat out of it, which is a surprisingly rare trait in a tool watch. The dial is nicely done. I’m into those outline indices—sadly the lume on them is allegedly pretty useless. And call me old fashioned, but I can’t say I understand the point of a dive watch without a diving bezel...?

For each mail I sent, the same automatic answer, with a different « ticket number » and a promise « soon as possible »! I regret to tell you that since those mails nobody contacted me. So, I’m really disappointed (and as I can see on the web I’m not the only one…) about your customers « Service ». I though that MAKARA brand was a bit serious, I realize you just sell products and don’t mind about users's problems.  Now, I’m gone ask a professional for a repair of the watch (by my own)… I don’t think that my "MAKARA experience" will interest you as much, but I will write a lot about it on watches's web sites. A representative will follow-up with you as soon as possible.

C_E_FYes the Makara "quality" seems horrifull! There is no customer after sale service... Do your self a service, don't buy this brand!
I like this one a lot and was totes gonna buy but then I spotted the brass knuckles clasp. Can I wear this if I don't own a Punisher t shirt?
