Product Description
With the Marmot Graviton series, you’ll never have to rummage around your pack to get to the one item you need. That’s because—along with a top-loading design with a floating lid and expandable volume—these backpacks have a J-shaped front zipper that offers easy access to every part of the main compartment Read More

Has anyone used both the Graviton and the Osprey Exos enough to compare the two? I've got an Exos 48, and for the most part, I'm extremely happy with it. But, when my pack weight approaches or exceeds 30 pounds, it gets uncomfortable.
What I'd like to see in a pack is: - Similar weight to the Exos - Well ventilated back, like the Exos - Longer padded area on the hipbelt (not thicker or wider, just extend the padding further towards the buckle) - "Stick" to the lumbar better than the Exos; at higher weights, it starts to slip from my lumbar, putting more weight on my shoulders.
The Graviton meets those first two criteria. How does it do on the latter two?
The REI Flash 65 (and upcoming 45) ticks the last three items, but the weight is significantly higher. The Gregory Zulu looks like it might also meet the last three, but is also significantly heavier.

I'm 5'2", does anyone know if the 38 will work for me? The onlay thing I was able to find online in reviews was someone who said they were 'petite' and it fit well.

KatrielWhether it fits is based on your torso size, not height. You need to know how to measure your torso then you will know. 2 different height people can have the same torso length.

Just getting into camping/backpacking and I want to do some weekend trips with my four year old daughter. Mostly late spring, summer and early fall. Will the 38l be large enough to bring everything I need or should I size up into the 58l?

lumberjakeI would go with the 58L, it would be tough to pack everything for a weekend trip with adult and child into a 38L.

slacking if you're just starting out, even one night for you and daughter would be tough to fit in 38L. Fancier, more specialized (expensive) stuff would fit 38L.

This is an awesome pack. If I didn't already own one I would be buying it here!

alexiconI actually ended up going a whole different direction. The weights were so close unless I went ZPacks that I ended up going for weight over the back arc. Found a Granite Gear Virga 2. 54L 19 oz $118.

Curious as to the weight of the 38L sans brain? Was looking at an Osprey Exos 38L and this seems comparable and priced lower.

I've never seen anything larger than a 48L in the Graviton. The larger size is definitely a 58L?

NoElectricSheepYeah, it's definitely 58L. We took it out this week. Curiously the 58L is not on Marmot's site but it is at moosejaw and summithut.

Amazing. I need a good day pack. My 58L Gregory Paragon is amazing but too big for my day-hikes. Absolutely love Marmot's quality so I'm very excited about this drop. I'd like to know the weight capacity as well. Would love to see more Marmot product drops!!

What is the weight capacity of the 38 and 58 respectively? Are the hip belts removable? Can the brain be used separately as a day-pack?

eabyrd1506Weight capacity is not given. Hip belts are not removeable. The brain can be removed from the pack to save weight, but not necessarily to be used as it's own day-pack.

I think this is one of the best all around backpacks. It's a tremendous value, carries well, has all the features most people need, and it's under 3 lbs. Two things that really make this stand out to me. One is the J-zip, which allows great access, making this super convenient for trail and travel. I have this on my (much larger) Mountainsmith Mountainlight Spectre and looooove it.

The other thing is the great breathability that the arched / stretched mesh frame provides. This is similar to the Osprey and Deuter (and even Zpacks Arc) design that people love.

At first glance, I didn't like that the side compression straps go across the zipper, as that gets in the way of the zipper opening. But smartly, Marmot has made the ladder locks removable and provided a pair of loops for each strap - one loop on each side of the zipper. So my fear was unfounded as you can anchor the compression strap either way. I don't have a great picture of how it unlocks so I'll try to post that later. At least here is an example of the compression straps anchored to different points on each side of the bag:

All great features. I love that Marmot puts two gear loops for poles / ice axes etc.

DannyMilksCompletely agree with you. These packs are for sure under rated and come with a really great feature set. Giant J zip allows great access to the pack and the multi placement side compression is really well thought out. I also think the back frame and tonal anodized aluminum wrapped frame is super comfortable with the mesh trampoline. Own one and love it. Fast light and strong.
