So my HiFiMan DAP uses a 3.5mm TRRS (w/sections wired differently than a 2.5mm TRRS) and the Pono DAP uses 2x 3.5mm TRS for its balanced outs. Time for some standardization!! Need a whole box of adapters such as this to use HPs and IEMs with the different devices.

eeagle4.4mm TRRRS is supposed to be the new standard for balanced audio, for both portable and desktop. It's getting adopted slowly.

HaulienI really want 4.4mm to be a thing. 2.5mm is too fragile and small for my taste, and you compare it to the 4.4mm's girth and surface area it feels more secure in a socket. Unfortunately manufactures don't like selling 4.4mm for some reason.
EcchiWhaleHiBy just made a DAP featuring a 4.4mm balanced output, joining the players by Sony, Acoustic Research, and the Pentaconn amp module for FiiO X7 (mark l and ll). There may be more I don’t know about yet. I have a Sennheiser desktop amp with two 4.4mm outputs, and a Pentaconn cable for my HD 800! @eeagle I totally agree! There’s even different wiring layouts among the 2.5mm balances connectors! I used to work at Apple doing phone repairs, I saw many 3.5mm plugs snapped off inside of phones, and removing the broken plug was always an iffy proposition (sometimes we couldn’t get it out either, without further damaging the phone).

EvshrugIt needs further adoption. Honestly, I just want standardisation, and I'm glad that manufactures are changing and all but 2.5mm is virtually set in stone, with many people owning custom cables and amps that use it already and people also want 2.5mm for other various reasons, so it sells anyway. And 3.5mm trrs connections should be for microphone-enabled devices only. I know adapters exist and all but damn.
EcchiWhaleDid you know that there is/was different pin out wiring diagrams among the 2.5mm size? I agree we should have some standardization, and of all the balanced options (2.5mm, 3.5mm, Dual 3.5mm, XLR-4, Dual XLR-3, Mini-XLR, RSA, 4.4mm, etc) I prefer 4.4mm the most for durability, mostly mobile ready size, and ease of use.

EvshrugNot until I read your previous comment, no. I think as a termination for the audio output I'd prefer 4.4mm overall too. XLR is acceptable as well, but there's no chance that XLR is going to get put on a portable device. I had to google what an RSA connector looks like, I didn't even know it existed.
EcchiWhaleHah! I think RSA (Ray Samuels Audio) is mostly just used by one manufacturer, but I heard about it because it was included on my Cavalli Liquid Carbon (not the Massdrop version). Point is, it’s the Wild West out there, and though dual XLR-3 was first and A&K’s 2.5mm is one of the most popular, it seems the headphone industry hasn’t agreed yet.
