Anyone who might know a bit about the small aaa flashlights know why the run time is so short on this light vs the other aaa flashlight on massdrop by Maratac? Same cree G2 running on a aaa batt, but almost double the run time from the Maratac.
Maratac CREE G2 Low mode: 5 lumens, 60 hrs Medium mode: 48 lumens, 4 hrs High mode: 160 lumens, 75 min
I like the look of this little light but it seems to have poor battery life compared to another aaa flashlight.

FlashmanNot sure, could be the Maratac is a later generation with more efficient parts...or they tested with different batteries.
Look at charts regarding Energizer Ultimate Lithium AAA batteries. They can last 4-6x as long on High power compared to alkalines. Even rechargeables handle a stressful load better than alkalines.
Example from 2011: http://www.led-resource.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/E2L-AA_Runtime.png

FlashmanAnother thing I remembered, is some of the flashlights that post longer run-times do not produce continuous light. They 'flicker' on and off at a rate of 60hz. This will help extend battery life, but it is terrible to use in my experience. The flickering is noticeable during fast movement of the flashlight itself or anything being illuminated.
Not sure if that applies to the Maratac, but I think this flashlight gets incredible battery life as I rarely switch to High mode. Low and Medium are my main modes and I haven't changed a battery yet.
These runtimes are on par or better than most AAA flashlights in this generation. In a couple years they will all have doubled again, so don't wait too long making a decision, this is a great little light!

SteveDropThanks for your response. That is an interesting point. I did send email to Maratac to ask them what battery they were using for the run times they reported. I do recall reading about pulsing a led light on and off quickly on a review once for a different flashlight, but that was being done to dim the light, quick pulsing high on and off to give the output of med light. That is a possibility it could also be used to improve battery life, but I think that would lower the lum output as well.

FlashmanI don't consider these things worth it. Get a flashlight that requires a 123A Battery. A bit bigger, but BETTER.

BioavailabilityThen don't get one.
I like this flashlight a lot, and I don't require 2000 lumens to find the remote in the dark. AAAs are plentiful and available everywhere. Good luck getting a 123A at a tiny convenience store while camping.
