Would be nice to see one with a built-in watch winder in the future.

SKOZ1911Interesting idea, we'd have to look at how much larger it would make the total box dimensions. Making sure this held all the core EDC items without taking up too much space on a dresser was a key consideration. It would also add a considerable cost, and might not be something that everyone really wanted - we try to consider things like that when we decide what is and isn't worth including. Thanks for the suggestion, we'll keep it in mind.

JonasHeinemanHey, Jonas. You’ve finalized your design but you have the advantage of having the entire community as a focus group. Unless you were worried about a patent, you could have taken advantage of a focus group the size of a city (us!) and brought us in a little earlier! Perhaps the next variant could be more flexible by adopting a modular format—with various modules or groups of modules available according to different priorities or preferences. I think that your bi-level design could—for instance—be a great platform for knife collectors. In this case, it would no longer be an EDC organizing tool but more of a way of efficiently (and handsomely) storing and displaying a knife collection. Lengthen your slots a bit and have two rows of folders with room for another two rows under (or maybe just storage space for maintenance tools, printed or written specs, clipped print reviews, or extras you sometimes receive like lanyard beads, etc.) In this case, even offer two sizes for different sizes of collections. Use us to figure out how many knives we need to store. And if you were accounting for getting electricity in to charge phones, how incredibly easy would it be to tuck in a little LED or two in there to illuminate our ‘babies’ (lol) either when the lids are open or even set to illuminate by switch when closed so they are protected while drooled-upon by jealous brothers-in-law, etc. So far, Jonas, it looks good but let us assist you in making it great! (And, yes, I and many others would spend more money on something That specific. I mean, when you start adding up the cost of these knives...and the time required to find specific knives in those drawers full of Spyderco and other small zippered solo pouches...or if you’ve unintentionally bought a duplicate blade you thought you lost...but didn’t...*sigh*...) Just build it...and fast, lol!!!

JonasHeinemanP.S. Some phones and chargers can generate a fair amount of heat—which is expected in a minor way. But—here in Canada anyway—there are an uncomfortable number of uncertified chargers being imported by smaller stores and gas bars, etc. mostly from Southeast Asia. Where I live, on the East coast, it’s been recommended to toss the cheap chargers and look for certification markings, etc.? And who unplugs their chargers from the wall Every time they’re done using them? The reason I bring this up is that there is a risk of fire and burns from these devices/cords/chargers—at either end of their cords—from electrical shorts. [Full disclosure: I was packing for a canoe trek in 2009 and had just replaced batteries for an LED head-mounted flashlight. I set it on a pile of magazines on the dining room table and left the room. I returned to the smell of burning plastic and a smouldering pile of magazines and melting plastic. I try to Only buy quality items and this one didn’t have a proper Canadian or American certification. Lesson learned!] Perhaps pass it by your Legal department? You don’t want to be associated with loss of life. (Or—*gasp*—Loss of Knife!!!)

AxeguyModular would be nice, but most manufacturers have a minimum order quantity ("MOQ") for every variation so it's not feasible in this case. The other challenge would be making it structurally sound, and still aesthetically pleasing.
Yes, we could have built a lighted knife display box...but that wasn't the goal here, partly because you can already any number of knife storage or lighted display box products. LED lighting is an interesting idea, but adds a great dal of complexity and potentially some certification - both of which add cost, but may not be something everyone wants, especially as this sits on a surface as opposed to hanging from a wall. I am sure we will see members come up with some great modifications to individualize their boxes, and I look forward to that - same as we love seeing people take gray titanium and doing crazy anodizing that they love, but may not make sense to do for the whole group.
So yeah, I totally agree that it would be nice to have optional bells and whistles, but it's not like we're not selling 200,000 Toyotas per month (yet). But, if you can find 10,000 friends to come buy this, I bet we could not only make LEDs optional, but offer multiple colors for the lights and probably some different interior/exterior combinations. (That's a real number BTW, in terms of MOQ it would take to do things like this.) Regarding the modular thing, we did think ahead on that one and you might see in the copy that, if things go well, we'll offer a drawer that fits on the bottom which will be setup for more knives, or watches, or a combination. We could probably get a poll going for that and even see if there's enough interest in a pen drawer.
"Design by committee" usually ends badly, but you're right that smaller focus groups are good for qualitative guidance, and having large groups vote on specific things with multiple-choice options also helps to give quantitative support. Massdrop was built around Polls, but as the community has grown to a multi-million member platform and the business model has evolved to include Massdrop Made products, their utility has not kept up with our processes. We are developing tools that we hope will offer new ways of engaging community members in the design process, and this is a good reminder to follow up on it.
Appreciate your feedback and taking the time to offer some suggestions. We are growing, fast, and we'll continue to involve the community as much as possible, directly and indirectly, every step of the way.

JonasHeinemanTheres been two people suggesting a modular design, make it three! I’d happily agree to this price point if that were there. Modular could be as simple as popping the plexi lid off and just add pegs of some sort to keep it together, add a drawer like you point out as well and i think you will see a LOT of traction on a future drop! After all, you guys keep selling cool stuff, of course we need more space 😂🤙🏼
Oh and plus one on a simple lock to keep the kiddos out, understand that might be extremely difficult with a modular design though.

JonasHeinemanDon’t take it like we (or I at the very least) are complaining! we all have our own ideas on how we’d like it. I’m glad that you all are pursuing ideas like this!

JonasHeinemanThank you for getting back to me. What you’ve got so far is a beautifully set up case so please don’t think that I am holding out for more! I like that all voices are heard and we feel like we are an integral part of this process. That is just one reason why we’re here! So put me down for two (!) and thanks again for hearing me out. Have a great week, Jonas.

AxeguyAlways glad to hear from you @Axeguy , and no worries @YankeeRider - we are community-driven in our product development, which includes these discussions but extends far beyond that. I appreciate you and every other member who's chiming in with suggestions. It's also great to hear ideas about how we can enhance your involvement in the development process. And I also think part of my job, which is a unique aspect of Massdrop, is being pretty candid with members about the challenges and limitations of manufacturing, and offering insights that are not usually available from other platforms - in addition to sharing all of the opportunities that our model offers. You guys make all of this possible, so keep on driving the discussion and we'll keep listening and responding! - J
