I feel we are using slightly wrong analogy. A Ferrari can do so much more than your average Toyota. Can this knife do so much more than your mid end Spyderco? But then again you may pay $150 for a very nice Spyderco and this was $500 so approx 3x price. A Ferrari is I guess 10x an average Toyota. Funny I know someone who has worked hard and bought a Porsche ... He drives it only once every number of months and has to be careful where he parks and in constant fear someone will steal or scratch it.
I don't know what to think of expensive things ... I would not buy this knife in a million years, but I would easily spend this much on a watch or pen. So I guess it's what your passion is?

it-manI thought the purpose of the analogy is to highlight the reason for embarrassment as in people with dissimilar interest and value come together for the wrong reason. You said you would be embarrassed to tell your friend that you paid $500 for a folder and my point was that by the time you will do so, you won't show it to your friends who don't understand the value. If you wouldn't in a million years pay $500 for a folder, then the subject of embarrassment is non-existent.
E.g. You come out of a coffee shop and bumped into they Toyota owner who spilled his coffee.
Toyota owner exclaimed, "Just my day! My wife loves this Toyota and I can barely afford the lease. Now my coffee is all over the seat! Wholly Molly! What's a beautiful car you've got there! Wow, never seen anything like it. How much did you pay for it?"
Embarrass.....
