A lot of people have been asking about amps, and while I've been trying to hit some of those questions, hopefully a more thorough comment can help answer some of them without addressing individual concerns that people have about their gear.
For context, I've owned, modded and been using the T50RPs for about five years. I'm not an expert modders, but I've been digging around in them quite a bit. I've owned two pairs of Mark IIs, the new T2oRP-III and Thunderpants, the original wooden rebuild of them.
In terms of amps, I've used quite a few with my various pairs over the years. I have an o2, a custom 2 watt peak DAC/Amp that still acts as my primary amp, a couple USB powered ones, a Mackey Mixer, an entry level tube amp that I can't remember the make...
The Fostex T50RP are definitely hungry, which is true of most planar magnetics. If you don't feed them enough energy, they will sound thin and bland. That said, they were designed to be studio headphones, and pretty much any amp that can provide a solid current should serve just fine. Even a smaller USB powered amp should give you enough to get you well on your way, and something like an o2 gives you more than enough.
If you are new to headphones and are curious about these, but are worried about needing some massive tube-laden monstrosity for these, I wouldn't stress. Are they suitable for play directly out of a portable player or the headphone jack in your computer? No, but in most other cases, you'll be just fine.
