These headphones are really good, I've not heard the HE4XX but these ones surprised me. You need a good amp, these are hard to drive.
You are the first I've seen to praise these.
I think most people is under powering them. These are very comfortable (a little heavy), sound signature is a little V shaped, they are not fatiguing and have enough clarity. Some people may not like the sound signature, but I think it's ok for casual listening. Only problem I see is that they need a powerful amp, otherwise they start to distort in the low frequencies, I found them to pair pretty well with a Jotunheim.
Perhaps the first you've seen but not the only person to praise them. ;-) > https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-fostex-t-x0-planar-magnetic-headphones/talk/1838074
Like elira, I was very pleasantly surprised by these T-X0 and quickly grew fond of them. As he notes, they are not efficient and really need a good amp to shine and get the most out of them. Trying to push these cans straight out of an iPod just will not do.
Compared to the HE400 they are a different animal with a different signature; neither is better or worse, in my opinion, just, well, different. It's in the ears of the beholder. Cheers!
Yes. I use my Lyr with them.
The WA22 is good with them as well.
im seconding elira, most people that i have seen that disliked them were underpowering them other then one guy that actually believed the hd598's sound better..which honestly makes me question his hearing at that point, i dont find them to be on the same level, let alone debatable.
I have an Aune T1 mk2 and planning to buy a different amp to hook up with these. Would the O2 amp be an upgrade?
I haven't heard any of those amps, but I would suggest a Magni 3.
