Wow, these are pretty to look at! Luckily that's just one of their great qualities. I have all 3 of these (purpleheart, mahogany and these) and I like this one best. It is a closer to neutral than it's siblings. It's not T1, HD800 neutral and that's a good things. These are a lot of fun listening to. They aren't fatiguing and they sound closer to a real speaker than most headphones. These aren't lacking in bass by any means, but they aren't the bass canons the purplehearts are. They seem to work well with any music type.
I would recommend any of these headphones to be honest. They all are different enough you could stand to have all 3. Fostex did a really great job on these. After the issues with the first run and the bubble wrap problems, I was worried. However they have definitely worked out the kinks. The removable cables are a nice touch as well. In this price range, you really cannot beat them.

WALRUSWHISKERSJust a little update after using these a lot. I have been using these at work . My desk neighbor said they could hear what I was listening to. It wasn't loud, but they actually heard me. So these bleed sound a little. However, that is probably why these are the most neutral. I think the dense wood is reflecting some frequencies out. Either way, these are my favorite of the 3 and would highly recommend them.

WALRUSWHISKERSI stupidly didn't read the descriptions properly enough. The Sennheiser HD6XX are my first really good pair of headphones and I knew right away I'd want a pair with more bass than the HD6XX, mainly listening to rock with a fair bit of hip-hop and EDC-type music. I order the Mahogany pair which seems to be the least bass-y of all according to their descriptions and the reviews... Oh well.

cwelton17I have the Mahogany and Ebony. The Mahogany has more bass than the Ebony but the Ebony has deeper extension and tighter bass. Purpleheart has crazy bass, the Mahogany is a middle ground and the Ebony is the most neutral of the three and works with the most music. That's not saying the Ebony has anything less than amazing bass. They're my current favorite headphone and I don't find myself genre pairing with them. They work as well with London Grammar and Mazzy Star as they do with Liquid Soul and Yahel. There's just a nice warm tonality to the Ebony that I absolutely love. I don't like the Mahogany as much for vocal centric tracks. The mids are more recessed.

anort3Ah ok well it sounds like the Mahogany should still be decent. I think I'm just in that panic mode when you're waiting for a new order to arrive and regretting every life decision, I'm not the only one who does this right? haha
The only other question I have: Have you had any problems with fatigue or harshness when it comes to highs? I've seen a few people complaining about the highs on specific songs being uncomfortable to listen to for both Ebony and Mahogany. Thanks for your input!

cwelton17Oh the Mahogany is more than decent, it's a very good headphone.
I have no problems with highs on either one. They extend perfectly for me.
Are you amping the 6xx right? I liked my HD600s more than my HD650s ( same as the 6XX ) until I got an Aune X7S. Now it depends on what mood I'm in but the 1.7w ( balanced ) out of the X7S makes the 650s come alive in a way that my O2/ODAC just can't. They still don't work very well for EDM at least not after hearing the TH-X00 but the more power you give them the better they are.

anort3Thanks again for the input! I’m currently using a cheap Amp/DAC combo from Monoprice that cost about $70 on sale but I’ve also ordered one of the LCX SDAC/Amps from here on Massdrop that will hopefully be a nice bit of an upgrade. But even with the cheap Amp the HD6XX sounds pretty good (one day I’ll look into the benefits of balanced ins/outs but too much for now lol). It‘s like I’m finally understanding what people mean when they use the fancy adjectives like “clarity” and “separation” and all that jazz Lol
And of course while I’m waiting for the LCX to get here I saw one of those Aune amps dropped with a much lower price so I has a crisis over that yesterday too haha So what I’ve really go to do I think is just try out everything I’ve got for 6 months before I go buying anything else!

cwelton17That Liquid Carbon X is more powerful than my X7S ( and probably a better amp ) so you're golden. As for balanced check out CorpseCables on ebay. For $55 shipped you can get a factory Sennheiser HD 650/660S cable that he hand reterminates in a 4 pin Neutrik XLR connector. That will let you get the full power and best sound out of your new LCX. I bought one for my 600s and another for my 650s and it was still cheaper than most single aftermarket cables.
Edit: Actually looks like he upped the price $5. I paid $49 + $5.99 S&H. It's $59 with free S&H now.

Still the best cable deal I've seen.

cwelton17X7s has very high output impedance so more useful for a more limited set of high input impedance (or supposedly also planar) cans (colors a lot lower impedance cans). And the X7s is really not fully balanced (if that sort of thing is important to you) - it has balanced output but single ended input. Bloody virtual wars have been fought over whether that is important or not.
I have the LCX and think it is a great amp - I would think you will like it as well. Resolving, quite powerful, no noise floor that I can detect on any of my cans. Real balanced input - again if that matters to you - but sounds great from single ended DACs as well.

jsmiller58I saw the ASR review of the X7S and even though they show a 10ohm output impedance all I can say is that it does not negatively affect the sound of my TH-X00 Mahogany or Ebony. I also have an Asus Xonar Essence STX with a 10ohm output impedance and through the STX the TH-X00s have boomy bass and sound off. Going back and forth between my Mayflower O2/ODAC and my X7S with both the TH-X00s I prefer the X7S. My X7S has a 2018 sticker on it so maybe they revised it? I don't know. But I'm happy with it.
The Headfonia review of the X7S didn't have any problems with low impedance cans either.

That being said the LCX is a superior amp but it's also more expensive. He's absolutely good with the LCX he's already ordered.

anort3I am glad that you are enjoying the X7s!! I also had it for a while (same as you the 2018 version). On my darker cans and my planars I also didn't notice much of a difference, but I also have some bright cans where I could tell a difference. Nonetheless the LCX or the X7s I am sure are great choices based on my experience, but starting from scratch I would advise choose the lowest output impedance with the power you need - least chance of problems later.

jsmiller58I absolutely agree. I already had an O2/ODAC when I got the X7S though. I mostly got the X7S for my HD600s and 650s.
Can't help but notice you have the Aeon Flow closed. If you don't mind what are your impressions? Specifically vs the Elex and DT1990? I've been considering those for me next purchase. I got a deal on some M1060s about a month ago but I couldn't get past the metallic sounding mids and I returned them. I did like them enough that I want some good planars though.
I feel like we're hijacking a great review. Sorry about that OP. :)

anort3Thank you for this tip! Turns out the manual of the LCX describes it as a Balanced Amp and basically that the TRS output will be shit quality...? It literally says something like "Don't judge this amp until you try it with a balanced cable". The LCX description on the site was certainly not as explicit as the manual was about that but it's ok. The point is I've only had these for a day and it definitely makes a nice improvement (though I have a hard time explaining exactly what's different haha) so thank you!
Should I always buy balanced cables dedicated to a specific pair of cans? Or is there a way to know if these cables will work for another pair, for example, my new TR-X00 which I am always enjoying quite a bit. Do the cans have to have the same impedance, etc etc?

cwelton17I can't think the single ended ( 1/4" ) output is terrible ( or indeed bad at all ) with the LCX but balanced exists for a reason. Almost all balanced amps I've seen put out their full power through the balanced connection and not the single ended output. The balanced connection on my X7S increases stereo separation and soundstage over single ended.
Cables will be somewhat headphone specific. It comes down to the connectors. Cables that fit the HD6XX/HD650 will also fit the HD600 and HD58X etc.
The TR X00 needs a specific cable with the Fostex connectors. It may benefit less from a balanced connection than the Sennheisers as its impedance is so low but it is worth trying. I have the older, fixed cable TH X00 Mahogany and TH X00 Ebony so I can't swap cables. If I had the newer TR X00 I'd get a balanced cable just to try at least.

WALRUSWHISKERSLol I cave in an bought the Ebony! I previously already had Mahogany and E-Mu Teak.
I just listened to it brand new out of the box last night, oddly enough I find it more bassy and vocal sound further away compare to the Mahogany, which is the opposite from the reviews I read. Also bass seems a little bit muddy compare to the clarity of the Mahogany too.
Some people recommend burn in for 100 hours do you think that would help? Or could it just be that I'm the odd 1% that actually like Mahogany's signature better? (Every review I read seems to like Ebony over Mahogany)
Though sound stage is definitely better on Ebony. You can hear the depth and layering much better.
