Just received my Ebonies !! First impressions: They sound amazing. Can NOT imagine needing more bass. Can NOT imagine anymore balanced sound, They are different on diffent sources. So far, the iphone 7, ipad sound SO good with no amp that I see no reaon for using one. I'm comparing the cans to Senns HD650 (amped), Beyer T5p, Beyer 770 80 ohm(amped), M50x. I also ordered the purplehearts, but not sure I'll need them.
It might just be me, but I find that the midrange is definitely quite V shaped to my ear. more so than my old dt770(80).
I tried ebony with iphone, ipad, both kenwood and NAD 7130 receiver headphone out, plus my computor headphone out with and without a small Altec amp. Granted, none of these are legit headphone amps (my headphone amp is tube OTL and looses bass with these 25 Ohm cans). They all sound pretty good with both EB and 770, but each one sounds different. Sometimes more bass, less bass, more highs less highs. The two receivers had more bass and less mids on both headphones. Bottom line, the iphone and ipad s(no amp) sounded significalty better and much more 'lively' than all others. It had pretty good mids too. The 770's were good on those Apple sources too, but to me sounded a bit more harsh on the highs (which I never noticed before, cuz I always just use them with just receiver amp while recording or practicing guitar). I need to find a small HP amp that will sound as good as the iphone/ipad when i listen to music on computer. In conclusion, for me, the pairing of the Ebony and iphone/ipad was like magic.
I agree the ebony is better in every regard, the mids may be recessed but they somehow have more detail at the same time. although I do see the need for the dekoni pads if they ever come back to retail, for more comfort.
As for the purplehearts I would like a pair at some point, eventually. As apparently the ebony is the odd pair out with the two being bass cannons by comparison.
I personally run mine of a schiit stack 2 (non uber).
yes, this is what some say about the ebony, but I can't imagine needing more bass. I got them both because I wasn't sure I believed it. The massdrop plots they show from Jude (of head-fi), puts the PH way above the other 2. But, z review and others agree with what your saying. For further confusion, this guy named "marvey" on the superbestaudiofriends.org site who was in on the development with foster and massdrop shows plots where all three are very close on frequency plot and stated to ignore Jude's plot because he probably didn't get a good seal on the ebony and magogany. Very interesting article.
