Got my Ebony's 2 weeks ago. Upgraded from the old ATH-M50's and all I can say is wow. The reviews that say these are musical I think state it best. All of my good music just became so much more lively. The bass definition is crazy. It's like going from an old standard def TV to a 4k OLED. Just insane. I'm rediscovering my favorite songs all over again. Since I am used to fully closed cans, the soundstage on this is a definite improvement, obviously not going to beat things like the K7xx, but it works for me.
The only downside is that can be sibilant at times, and yes, the mids are slightly recessed, but from what I've read, the tubes I have now (stock 6JI on LD I+) are bright and not good anyway. Going to roll to something that brings up the mids even more and is known for good female vocals and I should be all set.
Oh, and these are freaking gorgeous. I'll let the pics do the talking about that.
Left Cup ( hard to get good light with the angled pads)
I was expecting them to be darker? Did you get a lighter shade of wood for your cups or did you have some serious light shining on them?
They are darker when viewed off angle. I really like the way they look because they change depending on the light and your angle to them, but you can definitely tell they are wood. I was worried I wouldn't be able to see the grain based on some reviews I read, so I'm very happy I can with mine. I have heard that there is some variation in the cups, so some people are getting much darker ones.
I never even noticed that there was a grain until these photos, now that I look closer on the stock pics I can see it. Crazy.
Wow I was expecting them to be black in colour, or at least grey, seems like I need to expect my expectations accordingly every time I deal with Massdrop.
It all depends on the cut of wood you get. Ebony actually has a fairly large range in color and patterns compared to some woods. Google "ebony wood" and you'll see it ranges from dark brown to dark grey/black. It's a really lovely wood regardless though.
fwiw I've got the purple heart variant and they're lovely as well. :)
