Great sound but questionable build quality
I bought these headphones to replace my ATH-M50x. To make a long story short, the sound quality is great. But there are multiple design decisions that make me wonder if it's worth it at face value. Using the headphones immediately after coming from using the ATH-M50s for a few years was a nice surprise as the transition between the two was pretty seamless in terms of audio quality. Normally it takes a while to get used to the sound signature of a new pair of headphones (even if you repurchase the same model), but I find these headphones don't seem to require the extensive burn in you might find in other brands. Audio feels very balanced out of the gate and bass levels are great for pop songs. Overall, I can describe it as sounding "fun" - kind of like the ATH-M50s in that regard. Just get a decent DAC and you're set! My issues stem from the build quality. Immediately upon removing the headphones from the box my first impressions are that these headphones aren't built to last. Reading other people's impressions with similar headphones talking about accidentally snapping the hinge doesn't build a lot of confidence either. If the cable so much rubs against anything, you WILL hear it inside the cans. While not immediately noticeable when listening to loud audio, it's definitely noticeable listening to quiet audio. You literally can not move a muscle while wearing these. The cable itself is a little too long, so I wonder why they don't bundle a smaller cable like AT does with their headphones? The headphones aren't designed for portable use, so I highly recommend using these in the studio or at home. Be aware that the headphones do require a 6.2 mm headphone jack out of the box, so you'll need an adapter if you want to use these on 3.5 mm jacks. I could've sworn Fostex packaged these headphones with a cheap adapter in the box a while back? I find the headphones comfortable to wear overall. They feel surprisingly lightweight on my head, and I don't get that fatigue of wearing them after long periods of time like with the original ATH-M50s. I don't have much issue with the pads as some people have commented, although I can agree that they might not be everyone's preferred choice. While these sound great, I don't think these are ultimately worth $520 up front. There are too many minor issues to swallow considering you'll have to spend more to fix some of them. I would recommend getting these during a drop so you can spend the money you save on a shorter cable and better quality pads. I don't know if there's a fix to the microphonics though, so if anyone knows of one be sure to let me know. :)
