How do these compare to any open back headphones?
I own two pairs of TH-X00. One Mahogany and one Ebony. I'll compare them to my HD650 which are open back headphones.
The X00s are more bassy. Way more bassy. I also think they have a much more refined and clear sound. I like the sound more on them. The HD650 sounds muddy in comparision.
However, if, say, you're going to play games where directional sound is very, very important, such as CSGO, then I think the HD650 does the job better. It's much much easier to tell where sounds are coming from in them.
The HD650s are much more comfortable to wear for hours, though if you buy some custom earpads for the X00s such as the Dekoni earpads or the ZMF earpads you'll find that they're about as comfortable as the HD650... but different. Kinda.
The X00s are very easy to drive and don't really need a great amp while the HD650 certainly does.
The TH-X00 are very close sounding. So terrible for gaming basically, compared to a very cheap headphone like the SHP 9500. People say the TH-X00 has a lot of bass, it has a lot of bass by audiophile standards. If you intend to play games and listen to music with them get an amp with a bass boost for gaming, and don't use it for music (the amp). They also block out sound poorly. Disclaimer: I've never owned an open back.
Thank you both for the detailed information!
If you find and put th600 pads or any other more roomier pads I assume on them they will found very close to open headphones imho. I own th600 and thx00 Purple Hearts and when I put 600's pads on thx00 - they more open.
