In the original product proposal to Fostex, yes...removable cables were requested. Though It was in the original requirements, it didn't make it into the original version of the TH-X00 as Fostex is very methodical and careful. They spent years working on their removable cable system to make it their version of perfect. They could have done it in a few weeks, but it wouldn't have been a true Fostex solution.
Removable cables for the TH-X00 line is one of those features that the community never stopped pushing for and we never stopped requesting. This feature is so important to the community and to the headphones, that we renamed them: TR-X00 (The “R” is for removable.) If you haven’t been following the journey of the first Mahogany version of the headphone into the Purpleheart and Ebony wood variants, we offer three different wood types for different aesthetics and slight sound signature variation. However, since launch- the most requested (demanded!) change has been the ability to remove or swap cables. Why?  I’m so glad you asked! If you develop any issues with the cables over time, you can replace them. If you need a specialized cable to connect to gear or wish to have a personalized cable, you have options. (In the discussion comments which follow, please let us know if you modified your TH-X00 to accept removable cables and how you are using them now…Matt Takaichi is paying attention and sourcing cables for the community.  We’ve transferred the comments from the original headphone drop pages so that none of your contributions have been lost.) Thank you for your support of this headphone, it has been a true success due to community feedback and participation.
FYI, this latest change is the only one that we have planned for the series, we don’t have any other surprises on the horizon at the moment.  (I know somebody is going to ask me!) For now, the time has come and the TR-X00 is available for ordering on June 1st!

erickongThank you! How did you see this so fast erickong??
Here's a personal share...headphone adventures in 2014: I was attending a large headphone meet-up and Will Bright was mysteriously walking around with a brown paper bag... Inside?  A very early prototype Fostex TH-X00. He pulled them out and let me try them. Really nice-looking…no logos at the time, light blonde wood. But- boomy bass for my taste. (Same issue I had with the original Fostex TH-900.)   I gave some feedback and thanked him for letting me listen to them. They were “beautiful but not my preferred sound signature due to the amount and character of the bass”.
2015: Fast-foward to a mini-meet and someone had a brand new production pair of TH-X00 after they had just shipped the first batch. “Well, they are still really good-looking. I might as well listen for a quick check just to confirm I don’t need them…wait, what?!!?” “These sound like totally different headphones!” "Massdrop was able to tweak these THAT much??”
This was the second Massdrop Collaboration product that I heard. (AKG K7XX was the first.) Great improvements with both of these headphones and I see a pattern. I understood what Will Bright was up to and became a fan of the Massdrop Collaborations program. Now I am a part of things, of course... :)

CEE_TEEI am a Massdrop junkie with perfect timing. I like to check out the "coming soon" section whenever I hop on. Just so happened to see you posting them lol. Thanks for the history lesson! My roommate owns the mahogany TH-X00 so I have had the chance to listen to these. Actually, he is currently in Cali and his TH-X00 and his Massdrop CTH + SDAC DAC/amp were left in the apartment with me. Guess I will go abuse them for my listening pleasure

CEE_TEEThese look great, much better than the fixed cable on the TH-X00.
I just wish Fostex offered a service to upgrade the cable on existing units. It's not worth buying a whole new one just for the cable and modded ones don't always turn out great (not to mention it voids the warranty).

I_Need_MoneyThey sell the th610, there is also emu-teaks which are arguably better than all of these.
Is massdrop late to the game? What’s worth the premium over the 610s or the Teaks?
Typical Massdrop ...

ZimtronFirstly, the Massdrop version is cheaper than the TH-610, at least in the UK. Secondly, the whole point of these is the different wood grains and slightly different sound signatures as a result. Finally, this originally dropped before the TH-610 was created.

purplezorzAll of which has been done before and better ... for cheaper.
Chan’s work is ahead of the game, massdrop is late to the party.

ZimtronBetter and cheaper...and yet, these are still very popular. So they can't be that late to the game, that expensive or that much worse than whatever you're comparing them to?

FrostyPThey most certainly are, can you order them directly from the manufacturer as opposed to massdrop. There are also more cups available as well.

CEE_TEEHi Cee Tee I have a request and question that should be asked of Fostex. Can you reach out to Fostex and ask them can they make a set of connectors that will allow custom cables to be made? Sennheiser connectors are hit or miss but if there was an official set you could order then it would make things much easier after all what is the point of a removable cable if you can't make some nice snazzy copper braided cables for it.

CEE_TEEThink that version 2 of the t-x0 can be made balanced and get a T60-ish headband to make it really stand out? Maybe next revision, T50's need balanced power for sure.
