Just joined this drop- will I be able to just plug these into my computer to use these, or do I need to get some other equipment?
most computers use a 3.5mm headphone jack, and these need an adapter for that. Massdrop includes one, but it's a piece of crap, so at the very least you'd want to get an upgraded 1/4" to 3.5mm adapter. They certainly benefit from an upgraded DAC + amp, but they aren't "needed"
You can straight plug it into your PC with the adapter.
Thank you. Any recommendations for a DAC+amp that won't break the bank (around $200)?
You shouldn't need much to drive these but an amp will probably really make them shine. I've been really happy with Fiio and Schiit audio. They have several products around that price point. I have the Fiio X3II, Asgard 2 as well as the Fiio E17. I'm really happy with them all. (note: the Asgard is just an amp and would need a DAC)
Get the M9XX currently on drop too and it will be awesome...
The Aune X1s pops up on Massdrop fairly often for about $200.00. It has a good reputation and the price is right. The O2 + ODAC is also available from time to time and it is very good, as well.
It's not a good match with the TH-X00. The AUNE X1S has a very high output z which will not pair well with the low impedance of the Fostex.
Well, you can but these phones need decent amplification and DAC. I just plugged mine into my Schiit Magni/Modi DAC/amp combo and they sound great. If you don't want to spend extra $$$ for decent amplification, you should consider something less expensive. Grado SR80's are nice.
I've read the opposite, some reviews even citing that they sound better unamplified if the amp isn't a good match.
Thank you! I was asking because I have the Lyr and some tubes on the way. I have the AUDEZ LCD 2's and sounds great with the Lyr, I had the TH600 and Lyr was a little overkill for those. Now I'm waiting for my new TH-X00 and wanted to pair with decent gear so I will consider the combo you suggest although I listen to cd's most of the time. Also have the fidelio 1 and they sound great for the price, sorry just wanted to throw it out. Thanks again.
