Do these need an amp to work? What is recommended? I'm new to the whole audiophile scene, is there a recommended article?
no, but an amp and external DAC will help them. Especially if you are currently using a high output impedance source. Make sure your amp has low output impedance and you should be otherwise good.
What range would you consider to be "low?" I plan on running primarily off of Xonar STX which is 10.7ohms from the headphone output.
Need sub 4 ohms to get their bass to be its best.
As a very general rule of the thumb, you would want your amp to have <= 1/8 of the headphones output impedance.
So for the TH-X00, you would ideally want <=3-4 ohms output impedance for the amp. Note that this is just a very general approximation and is not scientifically/mathematically/subjectively proven to be 'better'. But for the most part, you want an amp with a low output Z for low impedance cans for better damping factor.
