Seeing the comments kind of makes me worried about QC issues of the Purple Heart's.. hope they take these comments and pictures to heart to hopefully ratchet up the QC.
IMO, saying Fostex regularly makes 1000$+ headphones but with these being only 400$, is not a valid reason to discount people's comments about inconsistencies and a slightly unfinished product. Glad there is a warranty either way.

I don't think this is quite so much a QC issue. The talk about the non lacquered cup on the underside has blown up on the massdrop discussions because of 1 unsatisfied customer. I didn't even realize the "issue" until I saw the post and had examine my own pair. I couldn't even tell without shinning a flashlight into the gap. That being said it doesn't bother me and the headphones still sound great so I'm happy.
Secondly, I think it's completely fair to say that fostex regularly makes $1000+ headphones made in Japan, therefore $400 ones made by them in China are not going to be as meticulously built as the TH900's. If you've ever seen this video:

you'll definitely understand why the TH900's are $1000+ and why they look so damn good. I can also almost guarantee the THX00's are not going through this same process in order to save fostex some manufacturing fees and cut back on the sale price of the headphones. Regardless of what anyone says or thinks about the "unfinished look in the gap of the cup", I still think these headphones sound brilliant and are still a great deal for $400.

If the manufacturer produced several thousand of these headphones and they are all alike (which they did), then this is obviously NOT a quality control issue. It is a design decision. If someone is having buyers remorse, just sell the damn thing, buy something else and be done with it. There is no reason to impugn the reputation of Massdrop.

While I dont particularly enjoy reading about people complaining about this gap issue, I dislike all those who deride them even more. This isn't a fan boy thread and if someone wants to complain about a design oversight (Which massdrop had a hand in), then this is certainly the right forum for that.

The proper forum for this conversation is between the buyer and customer service, not here.

Yeah maybe if it was a quality control issue, but it's not. It's a design issue and I like it when people express their honest opinions on a product. I've read enough turd polishing and would like more critical reviews.

What is the point of a "Discussion" thread then? It is here where individuals, item purchasers or not, learn about the specific item the thread is attached to. Whether or not it is positive or negative, that is the point of a Discussion thread... to discuss the item.
The thing is, Massdrop does reply to comments.. however it is rare that they do. So we have individuals express their views and -bicker- over the specifics. In the end, customer satisfaction is key no matter what the expectation is.
I have been a part of numerous drops from Massdrop and have yet to receive a sub par item, they have always been spectacular. Whether it is an Audiophile, Mech Keys, Men's Style, Ultralight, everything has been quality and worth every penny.

I love these headphones, but I think I am also having a balance issue where one side is noticeably louder than the other across any and all recordings. Do you know a way to test this?

Try popping off and swapping the earpads so you can gt a good seal, flip the headphones around and compare the sound pressure levels. If one side is louder than the other it should be obvious.
