how come the plug is 1/4 inch. what do I need to get to use these headphones with my iphone,ect...??
It comes with that adapter, but as zypherion52 said, don't do that to these headphones.
In other words an inferior adapter will compromise the sound quality?
No. Read zypherions comment.
No one can tell you what to do, you bought them after all, it's just that these aren't designed for on the go use.
If you just want to connect them to a source that outputs 1/8th inch instead of 1/4, then the included or linked adapters will both get you there. You still may want to buy the linked one as it relieves some of the strain of having a massive 1/4 inch plug & the adapter directly on the jack of your device, but that's up to you as well.
Was kinda being facetious, but the point is they aren't $20 or even $100 cans. They are better for kicking back and really listening to music, not at the gym, on the bus (though go for it I suppose), etc.
you need to get an iphone with 1/4inch output
