View Full Discussion Hi! Can anyone compare these to Shure 1540, which is the phones I've been using for the last couple of years? I use headphones mainly for metal music (death, black, grind etc.) in the living room (wife does not like "this horrible noise") through a Coffman Labs G1A. @Ruumis mentioned that TH-X00 is not so good for metal music. Anyone share the same view/hearing, and care to elaborate? If these really are better than the Shures and works with metal music I will give them a go, if not I will probably save a bit longer and go for MrSpeakers' Ether C. Thanks!
EDIT: Are these based on TH-600 or TH900? I listened to both when I bought the 1540s. The TH-600 I didn't like, they were way too bloated in the bass and not clear enough on the top, but I found the TH-900s to be way better than the 1540s (but I couldn't afford them at the time, the cost in Norway was approx $2000). So if I read this right, the TX-X00 are a version of the TH-900s, but with firmer bass and a bit more sparkle on the top?
X00s are 900s with more forward mids, rolled off treble, and less pronounced subbass. There are also some quality differences in sound reproduction but nothing that would warrant a 900 purchase for most people.
Ether C is amazing. Best closed back. Then denon d7000 used. Then th00 mahagony.
X00s are 900s? I'm pretty sure they're exactly the same as the TH-600 with ringpad, earpad, and cup mods... which is fine by me, but definitely not the TH-900
Nobody said they're 900s. The other member was asking how they compared to 900s, which I answered. This has nothing to do with its similarity to the 600s because that wasn't the question.
Fair enough, I guess I'm just a little frustrated that there aren't more measurements and reviews comparing not only the purpleheart to mahogany, but also the TH-X00 series to the TH-600 and TH-900 (side by side). Pad mod comparisons would be AMAZING too. I can't afford a new set of headphones, but if I could swap out pads for a new sound signature, that would be pretty tight.
I have seen someone put th-900 pads on their th-x00 and said it does change the signature to similar. 900 is still brighter with more recessed mids though... some people prefer the th-x00 sig.
People have said it's subjectively better than the TH-900. I think I'll have that opinion.
Haha yeah me too, especially when I pay $450 for them. My opinions are definitely for sale and I find that my brain often coordinates with my wallet. (Ex. Brain says, "of course that $1,500 DAC sounds infinitely better than your modi 2, your wallet already confirmed it, no need to be analytical.")
People said it's less fatiguing, and that's important because I might use these for up to 8 hours on the weekends.
