You usually like to play the hero, but every now and then it’s more fun to be the villain. Take over an entire city in the King of Tokyo, a board game that brings out the monster in you. Each player is a mutant monster, gigantic robot, or strange alien intent on taking over Tokyo. At the start of each turn, players roll six dice that show one of six symbols: 1, 2, or 3 Victory Points, Energy, Heal, and Attack. Over three successive throws, choose whether to keep or discard each die in order to win victory points, gain energy, restore health, or attack other players. Win the game either by destroying the city or being the only surviving monster once the epic battle has ended.
Take on the role of a wealthy merchant and spread your prestige across the land. In Splendor, players try collect gem mines, set up shops, and buy means of transportation to increase their reputation and best the other players. On a player’s turn, they may collect chips, buy and build a card, or reserve a card. There are a variety of strategies that allow players to accrue wealth and prestige points. The first player to 15 prestige points wins the game.
In this award winning game from Calliope Games, players must craft pathways out of game tiles. Be cautious, as other players and paths may lead you off of the board entirely. This is a deceptively simple game with a gorgeous design and tricky strategy. Remain on the board the longest to achieve victory in Tsuro: The Game of The Path.
