So I've been bouncing it around in my head for a month now and can't make up my mind one way or the other. I have my K7XX and plan on also getting the Fidelio X2. Now I use these on my computer so desktop is all I need it for but I can't decide between this and the Schiit Magni 2 (or 2 Uber?). I'm going to do the Schiit Modi 2 Uber and run it through the optical out on my PC but I can't decide between the two different amps. Got any sage wisdom for me?
(Also still need to ship my K7XX off to get serviced since it shipped to me with one of the two slides being jammed)
Again, I'm sad to hear about your K7XX incident. Hope you get your problems resolved soon. Anyway, I would recommend anyone this amp (since it's a masterpiece), but sadly there's no DAC this time. Magni & Modi combo is a classic. You always gotta remember that sound is subjective and everyone has their own different taste of sound, so even there might be a difference with every products... it doesn't matter how much expensive or 'better' other amp/DAC or IEMs/Headphones are. What really matters is your satisfaction with your product and knowing that you would use it for a long run, then your answer for which amp/DAC you should go for would suffice. Just sharing my personal thoughts with you, I wouldn't get the Uber version if I were you. Not because it's bad, I just don't think it's worth the extra cash. There are many products in the audiophile community that I want to purchase or test it, but in the end.. you just gotta find what you're looking for and not to see which one is the BEST. What I'm trying to say is that you should start somewhere small, then you can progress to something bigger. Rather than spending extra cash on the Uber version, give the normal version a try, then in the future you can save up your money for a higher quality Headphones and amp/DAC. I believe Magni/Modi will do the justice for you for now. It will sound great and it will give you the performance you need. Need better performance? Then upgrade it to something bigger like the Jotunheim with balanced DAC or experience something new like a tube amp in the future. No need to rush after all.
My answer to your question is don't get this one, I would only prefer this product than the Magni/Modi if it included the DAC. Honestly, O2 amp/DAC sounds somewhat similar to the Magni/Modi to me. Like I said, there's a difference between these two, but it's not a drastic difference. Also, I wouldn't want to wait months for Massdrop to ship this product.
Hope this helped a little, audiophile communities can be a bit complex when it comes to specs and the technology behind it so I didn't want you to think too difficult about it. Once again, good seeing you and keep in touch.
Some on forums have been saying that the k7xx not amplified properly will lead the headphones to be tinny sounding.
However, a excellent budget solution for driving low impedance headphones is the centrance dacport slim. Having the ability to drive low impedance headphones especially well, the centrance is recommended for pairing with the akg line up.
However, if the Fidelio x2 are high impedance(not sure about x2 impedance), you should get a decent amp such as a o2, as the centrance would not bring the best out of high impedance headphones such as the HD 6xx.
Do note though, I own a centrance for pairing with iems and it doesn't do very well for iems due to the inability to pair with phones and its high noise floor. Low impedance headphones are what is the selling point for the centrance which excells in it.
Oh yeah, and the centrance really runs hot due to the class a headphone amp.
Personally I feel the most value for money (for high and low impedance headphones)would be a o2 desktop amp paired with the centrance, ultilizing the amazing DAC in the centrance and the driving power of the o2!
However if you only own low impedance headphones, feel free to just get the centrance as it will be enough! And only if you can accept it running hot too lol
I do hope you purchased the amp in this drop, or you will be disappointed.
Meanwhile, the odac is under license of yoyodyne, thus massdrop probably werent allowed permission to include the odac with the o2 amp without breaching copyright law, thus massdrop could only bring the o2 amp to us.
Having a massdrop o2 amp and odac combo would require yoyodyne, the creator of the odac to agree.
