I just received my O2 today.
Very pleased, the unit is well built and solid. This thing can drive just about any headphone you could buy.
I ordered the medium gain(1X/3.3X) and I don't need to go higher than 11 oclock on 40-60ohm headphones and even with 300ohm headphones I don't go over 1 oclock. I'm using 1X gain coming from a 2.1V output DAC with system volume at 100%.
Unless you're source is a tablet or a phone I think most people would be fine with medium gain.
Even if you did order default gain you may just have to turn down your source to get a bit more range from the volume pot.
With 6xx (30Ohm) i need to go till 5o clock, pretty much at the end, with gain activated. Laptop/phones/digital piano as sources. So unfortunately I cannot confirm your observation
Do you have the same dac? You probably have a different source. Volume is subjective, maybe your prefer it louder
He must have some really, really weak source or we are way more sensitive to volume. Even from my phone (Honor 8) and with the 1x gain I only have to turn the knob to around 30% when using AKG K712 Pro (HD 6xx are much easier to drive).
