I am using Audioengine D1 with HE400i right now, but I just ordered a HD650. So do you guys think I need to buy an amp like O2 to enjoy HD650? Or Audioengine D1 is enough for it?

meikaoThe Audioengine D1 will probably be enough from what I'm seeing of it's specs. You won't be able to turn them into speakers like a more powerful amp, but it should be plenty for normal listening levels with a little bit of headroom. I'd give it a test before buying something new.

Zilfallion12mw @300 ohms The D1 is a piece of junk, HD650s want 300mw @300 ohms, and it's nothing to to with loudness, they're completely underpowered on the D1 and so are the 400i's.

Uzuzu12mw@300ohms is enough for 110dpspl. I'll admit that amping is not entirely about loudness and there are other factors involved, but 300mw is REALLY pushing belief.

ZilfallionI got HD650 this morning, and I think you were right. D1 was able to power up the headphones very very loud, and it already sounds better than 400i in my opinion. However, I am not sure how an extra amp can improve my HD650 at this point.
Well I already ordered Magni2, so I will report it later. Thanks!

UzuzuI tried with D1, and I feel D1 is very powerful enough to run HD650. If you are only talking about loudness, I think D1 is enough.
However, I already ordered Magni 2 so let's see how the extra 70 bucks can improve my HD650 at this point. Thank you!

meikaoI'm not talking just about loudness. The hd650 will sound less "full" if you are underamping it, in which case you are. The magni 3 will fully drive it, update us when you tell the difference, it should be very obvious between the two. Still, the hd650 sounds kind of boring out of SS but that's just my opinion.

UzuzuDo you think there are a big difference between Magni 2 (non uber: $65 from online marketplace) and Magni 3 ($112) ? Is it worth to pay extra $47 to upgrade from 2 to 3?
P.S. I sold my Audioengine D1, and now I only own Dragonfly Black (they sounded very similar, but dragonfly has stronger bass and slightly weaker treble). I am planning to lineout it to Magni 2.

meikaohuge difference? No. Both amps are clean, both are ver powerful. The magni 3 though has a noticeably larger amount of power output, I would say it would run the hd650 better. As for any other headphone, either amp is literally going to sound just as good for you.

I got Schiit Magni 2 today. Use Dragonfly Black as a source, I realized HD650 sounds more clear and all the sounds are more distinguished (?). Very hard to explain this, but I think with magni 2 I can hear much crisp and enjoyable sounds from my headphones.
It was very worth the money ($65), so I surely recommend people to get Magni level amp (like O2? Fiio E09K and K5 might not bad too if you can get it around $50). Thank you Uzuzu for reply and help!
