Would it better to have this amp and the SDAC as a stack or have the combo unit??
I had the same question, but just realized the 110v of the combo was out of stock, so I guess the choice was made for me!
It depends! A separate DAC adds a lot of clutter (I really don't have the space on my desk). On the other hand, the amp is more likely to wear out (I've had to send in my Objective--not Massdrop made--for repair, though I have a TON of hours on it), and I strongly suspect a separate ODAC would outlast the amp. From a sound quality perspective, some would argue it's better to have the two functions in the same chassis to reduce signal path, while others will say that it's better to have them separated (the same old arguments for having a separate preamp and amp). I never worry about degradation of the incoming digital signal because its just "1"s and "0"s. Does the ODAC add measurable distortion to the amp section? I don't know. Is any such distortion audible? I seriously doubt it!
Yeah I guess that’s true. I‘ve been pairing my O2+SDAC with my Aune X7S and it sounds great. But I just got the stand alone SDAC as well. Sounds the same of course but with the latter I can‘t turn off the red light on the front. However if I’m using the O2+SDAC as just a DAC than i can turn off the Amp and the light goes out. Still works as it’s usb powered.
How does the gain of the Aune compare to the Objective?
My one gripe about the O2 is that it's very light and moves around on my desk, even when just adjusting the volume knob. I bought a Corda Jazz and loved the heft and build quality. Unfortunately, it was just too loud for me at the bottom eighth or so of the volume dial. Sadly flipped it at a loss.
The O2 with my HD6XX I have it on low gain with the volume dial at barely 11 o’clock. With the Aune I also have it on low gain with the volume dial at about noon. Plenty loud for me. I’ve never heard of the Corda Jazz.
Do you have the standard gain or medium gain version?
