My desktop arrived today. Not plugged it in yet, but I am concerned because the included AC adapter does not meet NWavGuys minimum specifications, and as a result we cannot expect the amp will either. Did anyone else receive an adapter that does not meet spec.
The O2 requires a 13.5 to 22 volt AC to AC power supply with a minimum 14 volts recommended, minimum 200mA, no maximum. The Supplied AC to AC adapter is model SP120-12 is rated at 12 Volts 220 mA. This is disturbing because the AC adapter included with my 1st drop O2 Massdrop amp was well above the required spec at 15 volt 500mA (and is a lot heftier, 8 ounces vs 5).
I did not know that official O2 designs were allowed to not meet spec, and of course, if it does not meet spec on this, the only visible component, it makes me wonder if there are other areas that do not meet spec.
The wrong font on the front lettering ("Headphone" not bolded) is just carelessness, but providing below spec components seems like cheating. Please set me right on this if my information is wrong. Or let me know if I am the only one with a below spec power supply. See attached photo.
KyuuniCan confirm the power supply the 2nd version of the O2 came with is underpowered. I went ahead and got the desktop version and bought myself a Triad WAU16-1000 (From NwAvGuy's recommended AC adapters). I know it's overkill but no regrets on the purchase.
My O2 is so powerful now I can drive all my headphones around 9-10 o'clock on low gain even my HE-400s and AKG K7XXs. Setting it on high though gets me distortion but I'd like to try it with 600Ohm headphones and see how my O2 can drive those.
AkumaKuronoAlright, thank you very much on the information! I guess I'll pick up a new power adapter instead of a US - EU converter. Such a shame we did spend money on that underpowered adapter though :/
AkumaKuronoMassdrop support is supposed to get back to me tomorrow on the AC under spec adapter problem.
I imagine this was a change made by the Chinese manufacturer without Massdrop's knowledge, and that they will get them to ship us the correct one.
KyuuniNo problem, it does suck that they skimped out on the power adapter but I guess it's better than MD undercutting NwAvGuy's design and putting non-compliant parts in the O2.
Pretty happy with the 1st revision O2 from MD that I'm using it strictly for "portable use" with the rechargable 9v batteries. Also bought the ODAC to pair with the Desktop O2 and imo I feel it's better than the O2+DACport Slim combo that people had on the first drop.
GrochJust a note: having "Headphone" not in bold most likely not carelessness, but a conscious design decision made in a revision after the photographed samples were made - see the consistency with the Massdrop oDAC typesetting and font weighting on the primary packaging on the latest units.
Whether or not you actually like that is of course your personal taste, but "carelessness" is unfair.
daruGood Point, I had not seen that. Perhaps O2 Headphone (normal) and Amplifier (BOLD) would be a questionable design decision consistent with the ODAC.
O2 (Bold) Headphone (Normal) and Amplifier (BOLD) is careless or tasteless. The bookended different fonts will look like a mistake to almost everyone.
GrochI'd like to address some of the points raised regarding the specification of the AC power adapter included.
Given the feedback we received from the community, the ability to offer an 220V option was on top of the priority list for round 2 of the drop. We decided to switch our power adapter supplier to one that is able to offer both 110V and 220V variants that are certified with appropriate FCC and CE compliances.
The newer power adapter, while less powerful at its limit, is more consistent and reliable at the throughput it is rated for. And considering the additional certification process it went through, it is arguably a higher quality part than the adapter included in the previous drop.
The voltage output for the new AC adapter varies given the current draw required by the end point. The power adapter is rated for 12VAC @ 220mA, and as the pictures attached below indicate, the power adapter outputs 14.9V with no load, and 14.2V while it is powering an O2 playing music at a high gain setting. This is completely within the requirement as specified by the design.
And lastly, if there's any reason you feel your O2 isn't performing as it should, just be sure to open up a Support ticket via the Massdrop Support page. We'll be happy to help however we can, and facilitate with the replacement process where appropriate.
GrochWith this amp can I get away with using a ly06-120-500U ? I just moved and may have lost the ac adapter and I’m waiting for a new one .. can I risk it or no ?
