yeah, exactly how i feel, Rdoxey. i get it if they couldn't make the brushed-steel/silver-accent knob look with the price we paid. if they'd been upfront about it, i wouldn't have minded. instead there's a billion pics of this gorgeous little unit, and then we get the bargain-bin version. TBH it's the same problem that plagued this entire massdrop: not enough communication and what almost seems like deliberate misinformation. i know this is crowdfunded and thus more like a kickstarter than a traditional online merchant, but still... can you imagine buying something from Newegg like this? pay months in advance, get the shipdate pushed back for weeks on end, and then finally get a product that's clearly made with inferior materials. wtf? i just hope to god they didn't skimp on what's inside.
I am sorry you feel that way.
To clarify, the model that is shown on the product page is a rather early prototype with off-the-shelf parts. The prime directive for the prototype was to ensure the audio performance is consistent and faithful with the O2 design, therefore we choose to not wait for the bespoke parts that was planned for the production units. There's no excuse for the inconsistency of the pictures shown on the product page, and we'll certainly be updating the product pictures shortly to reflect the most up to date changes that we've made.
I understand aesthetic opinions are completely subjective. Having said that, the volume knob is actually one of the most time intensive and expensive piece of component to manufacture for the entire amp. It is our own design and is milled out of a piece of aluminum that's then anodized with the same consistent finish as the rest of the case. In fact, the cost of this component is multiple times more expensive than the volume knob on the prototype.
And if they followed the Drops Discussion they should have received the updated post showing what the final version would look like this just goes to show people don't take the time to read what they get into as the original listing said the design isn't final and might change by the time the Drop ended based on feedback from the community.
I am very happy with the build quality. The unit has heft and was packaged in custom-cut foam which is not something I expected. The volume knob has an excellent feel to it. And the amp exactly matches the picture posted by Will in the discussion. It's dead silent and sounds great. Thank you for the great work and attention to detail on the amp.
