Hello Everyone,
Sorry it took a while, we did hear you.
There have been 6,647 requests for another drop of the Massdrop O2+ODAC DAC/Amp Combo: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-o2-odac
We were not able to continue offering that version at the price point that made the product accessible, so we reached out to Grace Design for a new DAC that meets or exceeds all of the ODAC specifications (at a reasonable price).
Please meet the new Massdrop Objective 2 + Grace Design Standard DAC (SDAC) combo.
Designed to measure well, sound transparent, and be affordable.
Michael Grace does a great job of explaining some details about the SDAC here: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-grace-design-standard-dac/talk/1806625
In addition: Since we have several DAC & Amp products available right now, here’s an overview to help with your options…
DAC & Amp Family UPDATE 9/18/2017: https://www.massdrop.com/talk/2363/audiophile-custom-products-dac-amp-update-9-18-2017

As long as it outputs 12VAC and the same output current or more (original does 200ms), you'll be fine. The power connector has to be the right one for the O2's jack and it must be center positive. Here's one: https://www.jameco.com/z/ACU120050R-12VAC-500mA-AC-to-AC-Wall-Adapter-Power-Supply_2179614.html A bit more than 12VAC wouldn't hurt in a way, but it could damage the voltage regulators because they lack heatsinks. Those regulators can take up to 40V or something, but without proper heatsinks, they'll overheat and die. Mine died and so I've been using a spare 16VAC unit from Schiit that I had lying around without any issues for over a year.

i'm going to be getting my first dac. i'm new to this kind of thing. just wanted to ask if this sdac is a good place to start. i have a cheapo 5.1 surround setup from devant that i use for watching & playing. i also got a separate 2.1 m-audio av40 for mixing. also have an audio technica m50. i'm thinking of getting a scarlet 2i2 for mixing & recording, although i'm not sure if getting a separate dac is the way to go for just general use (watching stuff, playing, just casual listening) & even moreso, how to set it up. any tips? looked into some amps before but i got advised that i need a dac before i can utilize amps. i looked at schiit stuff too, specifically the modi & magni 3. but they're fairly steep for someone who is just starting out & barely knows a thing or two about dacs in general.

If you're trying to decide between this combo dac/amp and the modi 3/magni 3 stack as your starter set... I think I would go with the Schiit stack. I haven't heard the O2 + SDAC and that design has been reasonably well regarded for a long time, so I'm not going to act like it isn't worth it, but... 1) the latest iterations of both the Modi and the Magni are *extraordinarily* well-regarded for their price-point, both by measurement-heads and listening-is-everything folks in pretty much every case I've seen; 2) having DAC and amp as separate units will make fiddling with/partially upgrading your signal chain cheaper and more modular, which is really just FUN when you're first getting into audio; and 3) if you don't care about getting a brand-new unit (which IMO is pretty stupid, especially when you're at the <$100 price point; all my best audio gear and almost all of my gear period I've gotten secondhand) then you can get both the Modi and the Magni for $10 off each on b-stock https://www.schiit.com/b-stocks or even cheaper if you feel like going for non-official secondhand like eBay/craigslist. That's only $30 more than this drop price in total! (Not counting tax or shipping on either side because that's a pain, but you know, ballparks.)

it says "When you're using the USB input, the RCA jacks act as an output from the SDAC. If you disconnect the USB, you can connect analog input from your favorite DAC straight to the O2." So I assume you want to use the RCA as output? Then you have to plug in USB and POWER and run you RCA out When you remove the USB, then RCA is input, which it only acts as an amp, POWER have to be pluged in , in either scenario

You will have to use the RCAs for SDAC output, but if you want the O2's output, you must use the 1/4" output on the front.

i glanced on ifi's website and sadly I couldn't easily identify whether the 12V 1.8A is AC or DC. I assume it's DC when the O2 needs AC. a google search of 12 v/1.8A ifi power supply showed "DC power supply" links.

The "stock smps" is not an smps, it is just a transformer in a plastic box, the power supply is built into the O2 PCB. It is a linear PSU. SMSPS PSUs output DC voltage, not AC like that box included with the O2 to supply power, but the voltage conversiona dn all that jazz is done by the O2's PSU circuitry inside the unit.

Definitely worthwhile, as you're getting a great DAC chip and very good power to be able to drive the HD58X (assuming that you don't have any amplification at present). The 58Xs still have relatively high impedance, so they benefit from amplification. I had the same experience with the 6XXs, and I can tell you that a much fuller and clearer sound comes out with a decent dac / amp. O2 + SDAC DAC/AMP is a great choice for the money if you're just starting out.

Verified O2 Power Adapters

search

General Notes The Objective2 strictly requires an AC-to-AC transformer, with minimum 13.50VAC output (14VAC+ recommended). AC/DC adapters are very different from AC/AC adapters. Manufacturers commonly abbreviate and refer to all types simply as "AC Adapters", which gives no indication of their actual output. Most adapters are in fact AC/DC type, which supply DC current. These power adapters are used with typical electronics such as laptops, game consoles, computer peripherals, etc., and are not compatible with the Objective2. Required Characteristics The Objective2 accepts the following power adapter characteristics: Type: AC-to-AC Transformer (AC/AC, not AC/DC!) Voltage: 14VAC minimum, 20VAC maximum Current: 200mA minimum, no maximum Plug Size: 2.1 x 5.5mm (Inner Diameter x Outer Diameter) Choosing a Suitable AC/AC Adapter The above table is a user compiled list of power adapters suitable for use with the Objective2. Select an adapter with the correct plug type for your country. Refer to the following resources for help with plug types: Power Plugs by Country - Electric Power Around The World
Comparison of Plugs - AC Power Plugs If no adapters are listed with your country's plug type, try to select a foreign adapter with the correct Input Voltage and Frequency for your region. Then use a plug converter, such as the Kingsmart UNI001. As a last resort, you may need to use a Step-Down transformer in conjunction with one of the commonly available North American power adapters. One example is the Simran SMF-200. From JDS Labs website (http://www.jdslabs.com/O2_poweradapters.php)

@Wariofart The package DOES come with a power adaptor - you need to choose which one you need from the drop-down in the checkout;
  • 110V
  • 230V
I could only choose the 110V at the checkout (the other option was sold out), and so needed to see what I could use here in Australia being 240V mains power. The contact/help was totally useless - took ages for them to write me copy/paste one-liners with no substance and they didn't understand the questions I asked them. Very disappointing and expected more. I found a Jaycar Mains Adaptor 15VAC 1.5A Unregulated, MP3059 (https://www.jaycar.com.au/mains-adaptor-15vac-1-5a-unregulated/p/MP3059). (So I have a spare/leftover 110V adaptor for the US...) The device plugs into the power as well as the USB plugging into your laptop/pc/AV jack. See the operation manual below. If you have 3.5mm headphones plug you also need to buy an 6.5mm Stereo Plug to 3.5mm Stereo Socket Adaptor like this one: https://www.jaycar.com.au/6-5mm-stereo-plug-to-3-5mm-stereo-socket-adaptor/p/PA3590 Here are the operating instructions that came with the device (there was no other paperwork): outside, unfolded

I just got mine today. It is passing the sound out through the back output to my computer speakers just fine, but my headphones are getting a horrible buzz. When I first turn it on everything is good and then after about 45 seconds I get a building buzz in the left headphone. I am using HifiMan 400i's. If I turn off the unit the buzz goes away... for about 45 seconds, and then it comes back. I have unplugged the unit, moved the outlet it is plugged into, and used another set of headphones (Bose) and still get the buzz. Can someone help? Thanks.

I'm poking around here to see if others are doing this. I picked up a second-hand unit and get a similar problem. Drop decided to simply short the SDAC output to the O2 RCA input, from what I can see looking at the PCB. This should be handled with a relay or something to properly do the changes in connections or whatever, or there should be a switch. The design is botched, I believe.

Other key things to know about when using a DAC for the first time is to adjust the Windows Sound settings so that the audio data is sent to the DAC for decoding in its full resolution. This video does a good job of explaining how to set up the DAC in Windows (there are simular tutortilas for doing the same for Mac OS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cc9uTIweTyY
search
Even better is enabling a direct pass through of audio data which bypasses all the Windows processing and effects. This possible by installing an ASIO driver, or using the settings in a music player such as the Tidal app that takes control of the DAC.
