i'm going to be getting my first dac. i'm new to this kind of thing. just wanted to ask if this sdac is a good place to start. i have a cheapo 5.1 surround setup from devant that i use for watching & playing. i also got a separate 2.1 m-audio av40 for mixing. also have an audio technica m50. i'm thinking of getting a scarlet 2i2 for mixing & recording, although i'm not sure if getting a separate dac is the way to go for just general use (watching stuff, playing, just casual listening) & even moreso, how to set it up. any tips? looked into some amps before but i got advised that i need a dac before i can utilize amps. i looked at schiit stuff too, specifically the modi & magni 3. but they're fairly steep for someone who is just starting out & barely knows a thing or two about dacs in general.

rlxaIf you're trying to decide between this combo dac/amp and the modi 3/magni 3 stack as your starter set... I think I would go with the Schiit stack. I haven't heard the O2 + SDAC and that design has been reasonably well regarded for a long time, so I'm not going to act like it isn't worth it, but... 1) the latest iterations of both the Modi and the Magni are *extraordinarily* well-regarded for their price-point, both by measurement-heads and listening-is-everything folks in pretty much every case I've seen; 2) having DAC and amp as separate units will make fiddling with/partially upgrading your signal chain cheaper and more modular, which is really just FUN when you're first getting into audio; and 3) if you don't care about getting a brand-new unit (which IMO is pretty stupid, especially when you're at the <$100 price point; all my best audio gear and almost all of my gear period I've gotten secondhand) then you can get both the Modi and the Magni for $10 off each on b-stock https://www.schiit.com/b-stocks or even cheaper if you feel like going for non-official secondhand like eBay/craigslist. That's only $30 more than this drop price in total! (Not counting tax or shipping on either side because that's a pain, but you know, ballparks.)

kevinhbi didnt even kno schiit had a b-stock section thanks so much i have been racking my brain for the past month on which amp to get for my hd6xx-- i was hesitant buying any thing off this site again due to customs problems charging me an exuberant amount of money for my hd6xx- but i can guess no longer ill go with a schiit stack :)
