Hello everyone, I am a total newbie.  I just bought a Schiit Modi 3 (with only a vague idea of what it does :) and I am waiting on delivery. Anybody out there that can help me in total laymans terms... can I plug my Hiby mp3 player into this?  Can I plug an external HD with FLAC files into this?  Can I plug the Schiit into a good old fashioned receiver/amp ?  Could I use my Blu-ray player to play CDs and use the optical cord from it into the Schiit?   Any advice would help.  Thanks in advance.

yardleyjeffBasically, your computer represents sound digitally, and your headphones/speakers represent sound with analog signals. The schiit modi converts your digital music files into a line level analog signal. There's a built in dac in every digital device that has a headphone output, including your computer, phone, and Hiby mp3. Most of these dacs are low quality (With the exception of the one in your mp3, it's probably pretty good), which is why you would want to use a modi 3 instead. The output from the modi 3 isn't ready for headphones or speakers, the signal is line-level, meaning it's very low powered and would need to be amplified before it hits your headphones or speakers. Basically what you want is Good Digital file -> Good Dac -> Good Amp -> Listening Device.
  • can I plug my Hiby mp3 player into this?
  • I'm not 100% sure, but the dac built into the Hiby is probably good enough quality to not need to
  • Can I plug an external HD with FLAC files into this.
  • No, it's not a music player, it needs to be hooked up to some kind of computer
  • Can I plug the Schiit into a good old fashioned receiver/amp
  • You'll need to, the signal has to be amplified before you plug in headphones or speakers.
  • Could I use my Blu-ray player to play CDs and use the optical cord from it into the Schiit
  • Yep! This is exactly how you want to use it.

yardleyjeffWhat adapter did you use to change USB c to micro? I’m trying to do the same setup with my r3 pro and modi 3, but one adapter i picked up was d.o.a.
