Hello everyone!
I’m excited to announce our newest Massdrop Made product, the Peak Merino Hoodie. This beefy, 340gsm 100% merino hoodie was inspired by the best hoodies of the last decade and designed for long-term active use, whether outdoors or during your daily commute.
Made in the USA: We partnered with a high-quality domestic factory located in Allentown, Pennsylvania to cut and sew this hoodie. Allentown has a rich history of American manufacturing, and we wanted to partner that with the highest quality merino wool to bring a truly amazing product to market.
Australian Merino Wool: When thinking of high quality merino wool, there is no question that the best product comes from Australia and New Zealand. Our merino wool supplier has been producing wool for 35 years and sources non-muesled wool from regulated animal welfare focused farms. They are also pioneering local wool production sustainability but incorporating a water treatment facility which cuts down water usage by 40%.
Partnering with Wool Experts: In addition to a high quality American factory and Australian wool supplier, we partnered with friend and wool expert Chad North to oversee the development and sourcing of all of our materials and trims. You may know Chad as the founder of NorthxNorth, a US based brand known for their merino wool kerchiefs and neck gaiters. Working with Chad allowed us the opportunity to tap into his years of knowledge in working with merino wool, to ensure this hoodie offers the best in quality materials, features and construction.
Fit: We analyzed the fits of some of the best hoodies in the market, as well as merino hoodies from multiple brands, to land on the best of each to offer a unique, and thoughtfully designed fit. The overall fit is on the slimmer side to offer a clean aesthetic for office use, and allow the features of the wool to come through. john.webbMore an outdoors request than mens style, but Merino/Polypro thermals (tops and bottoms) would be nice.
Polypro in my experience works so much better than polyester, especially in thermals. Unfortunately due to the cost cutting efforts of most companies, hardly anyone uses the stuff anymore. Helly Hansens "Warm Ice" line was the last use of it i know of, but they too recently discontinued it. With winter getting closer, it would be great to get a new source of it in an MD collab. Maybe hit up Ibex and see if they want to work with you on it, since they are currently restructuring. Could end up a popular new daily drop.

@kim.suarez this looks like an awesome product, I love Merino wool (all of my favorite sweaters are Merino wool).
I'm curious - is there a temp rating on this? I know that any rating is subjective, but this looks seriously warm - more like a jacket than a hoodie.

Agreed on temp rating factors. Generally they are little more than a guideline at best for any article of insulation. For a more practical although personal perspective, I wore this very comfortably as a mid-layer outside for several hours of light work at 6°F with a good wool blend base layer and a quality canvas anorak shell (no liner.) Great breathability and softness. I would not expect to use this as an outer layer except maybe urban casual, because I think it will prove a bit weak on wind resistance and also possibly on durability against snags.
We actually do have internal employees with apparel experience. In addition to receiving a degree in Apparel Product Development, I've been a Product Developer for over 8 years with companies including Levi's and Patagonia before joining Massdrop. For this merino quality, we've followed the direction of both the mill and the formal testing lab to ensure the proper care instructions are included on the garment. Not all merino qualities are made the same, so it is recommended to follow the specifics of how each is performing in formal testing. We've only provided this information to allow the longest lifespan of the garment.

Whoa, my comment was about the wool products in my closet -- it had nothing to do with this drop. I'm not interested in this drop as it's a product I don't want, nor would it fit me, even if I did want it.
I wonder if that (the do/do not dry cleaning recommendation) is a difference between wool products created for exercise versus casual wear. I always wear a liner under my sweaters, so they probably get dry cleaned roughly once a year. I would imagine that Merino wool athletic wear would get washed all the time, so perhaps that's the difference? Maybe after 20 dry cleanings Merino really starts to breakdown.. ? Interesting stuff :-)

JAK9Having received it I can tell you there's no way I would have paid as much as I did if I had seen it in person. I'm interested in what other people think of it.
Also mine was too big but I guess I have myself to blame for that haha
