I don't understand why people are complaining about MD getting into the niche audiophile market. I've read numerous comments about how these are overpriced, or that MD has no business asking $300 for the PLUS. Have they not proved they understand the science, the culture, the brands, and the quality of audiophile gear through their growing collaborations with long established manufacturers?
It drives me nuts when people complain about the price, or want to know who they're working with. MD's history alone dictates they know what they are doing. Yeah you can get lower priced multi-BA options out there for cheaper. Yeah you can find prettier IEM's for cheaper. But I don't walk around asking everyone "hey check out my sparkly pink super high-end in-ears cause they look cool". I could care less what these look like. The end goal is great sound. I buy high-end audio because it sounds great, because I know the designers put in their blood sweat and tears to give the community (and themselves) a product you'll want to use day-in, day-out because the sound quality ringing between your ears makes you smile.
People need to keep perspective. I believe the PLUS is worth every penny of $300 because of the love and engineering that went into them. When you have active HeadFiers praising them, MD obviously did it right. If $300 is too much for your audio selection, you're the playing in the wrong sandbox to begin with. I applaud MD for being active, confident, and even progressive. Keep up the good work MD, those of use who really appreciate pure audio design are with you.

Fox2twentyI mean, I appreciate the effort, but I've been enjoying a couple kz hybrids recently for a lot less.
How about "to each their own." ;-)

Fox2twentyThat's my whole point, to each their own. Others shouldn't antagonize MD for their products. Everyone likes what they like, regardless of price/look/quality.

amdee1979Some of this is so ignorant.
its not even about the $300 dollar tag which obviously isn't a lot in the IEM space. It's a kickstarter on massdrop. Instead of taking a risk and getting them made standing confidently behind their product they want the community to foot the bill. A few people have heard them, people I don't personally know or trust. You really take the word of people like Jude of Head-Fi or Marv of SBAF who clearly profit from endorsements (not necessarily MD but in general). I don't.
Seeing as how massdrop wants the consumer to fund their kickstarter for these IEMs I think people have the right to be critical. They are ugly, how is that something you think people shouldn't be allowed to say?

scoopbbThey said that they "don't understand" the opinion, not that people "shouldn't be allowed to say" their opinion. This hobby is heavily driven by trusting the word of strangers. Appearance and sound are both extremely subjective. Purchasing IEMs which one hasn't heard in person always involves an element of risk. Personally, I have a good feeling about the designers' ambitions and quite like the minimalist appearance. YMMV

CuriouThank you @Curiou, that's exactly right. I never said people can't say IEM's are ugly. I just don't feel it is constructive criticism. By all means, voice your distaste for the aesthetic of the phones, but it is my opinion that if you put a lot of weight into the visual aspect of mid-to-high end audio then you're putting your energy into wrong the target, again my opinion.
Take for instance the new Vibro Earphone. Those will look like giant black jellybeans shoved into my ears once I receive them, but I won't care at all as long as the output is blissful. If they don't sound great, then I guess I blew a bunch of coin. However, I trust Luke (@VibroLabs) to be a fantastic audiologist, and yet I've never met him. And yes, I absolutely put my trust into audiophile community members because without them what do I have to go off of? CNET reviews?
I've done nothing but take leaps of faith when it's comes to my personal audio gear selections based off community reviews. I bought a set of Noble Djangos at $1000 price tag at the same time I purchased my U4-SE's off MD. The Djangos are beautiful compared to the U4-SE's but I felt the A64's way out-performed Noble, so I returned the Djangos. I'm now settled into a set of Noble Sage's (2 BA's) which I think outperform the 4 BA U4-SE. Audio is a funny thing; everything sounds different to everyone. I just think it's silly to criticize an earphone assembly as long as they sound great to me.

scoopbbSo don't buy them (or preorder, or fund them, or whatever you wanna call it)... Complaining about it is a little pointless if you have no stake in MD tho, a year from now it'll be forgotten and they'll be judged solely on their technical merits.
If you wanna do the same then you're wise to hold off, I don't see how Massdrop going for different capital sources or selling tactics affects you... The whole site is an alternative to the typical consumer norms so some experimentation shouldn't come as a shock.
I'm not sure how low profile IEM can look much worse/better tbh, once they're in your ears the cable up or down style and the cable itself is more noticeable than the faceplate or a tiny bulge on it anyway.
