Massdrop x Sennheiser HD6XX or Massdrop Plus Universal IEMs. I am currently signed up to get the HD6XXs as an upgrade over my current over ears, based on their reputation as being amazing, open backed, and not wanting to miss out on them while they are this well priced.
BUT, I use IEMs like a lot, all day, and am not super chuffed with my current ones. Would I be crazy to pull away from the HD's and go for the Massdrop IEMs instead, as they would get more use, or should I get the long time favs of the audiophile community and wait until I can budget for a set of IEMs as well?
Personally, I enjoy my MD+ more than my 6XX. It's an unpopular opinion but they are by far my least favorite headphone and spend more time in their box than anything else. They're just way too smooth and boring and definitely lack bass impact. The MD+ is really great for the dollar. Neutral, no veil, and has a bump in the sub bass region so you'll definitely get some bass impact. Since you enjoy IEMs I see no reason you'd enjoy the 6XX over the MD+ unless you just NEED a slightly larger soundstage. I can't even give the imaging and separation win to the 6XX personally. I am probably biased due to my other open ears but from a pure musical enjoyment standpoint, the 6XX comes in at almost dead last for me. Just my .02 cents.
I felt the same about my 6xx's. Neither engaged me or made me feel relaxed so i sold them a few months ago. I just got the MD+ and I've fell asleep with them on the last two nights. Ideally though i had to turn the volume/sub bass down cause it's very big.
The md+ is both fun and relaxing to me. Also has more sparkle than the 6xx, but then 6xx is more mid centric. I won't pretend that I never got chills listening to my 6xx's, but MD+ does it all better to me and isolates sound. It also sounds like an over-ear set of cans somehow. The first time I listened for an hour i forgot i had them in my ear XD.
To me the 6xx did have some veil that impeded on my enjoyment of the source material. That is definitely not present in the MD+ at all which is easily enjoyable at low volume levels. There are better over the ear headphones, so don't think that you are missing out on anything not buying the 6xx.
