I previously had a two star review generally being unhappy with the sound. It sounded flat but yet lifeless with no sound stage. So I've had the headphones for over two years since the Mid '18 drop. I made sure the connections were correct, tried a few of the mods in vain to no avail and voided any warranty in the process.
I plugged them in today and they sounded the same. Shook my head and gave the right channel a wtf smack on the outside of the headphone. Fixed! The sound stage opened up and the bass improved a a bit. Now I get what people are talking about. Admittedly after some trial and error my ear still prefers a little more 60 hz than most people on the SQ. Went to a frequency response page and I dulled the 5khz range and boosted the 9khz range very slightly. The 5khz range did cause some fatigue so it certainly helped. My other pair of cans (BD DT-770 80 ohm version) has the exact opposite problem at the 9khz range where I have to dull it from being too bright.
Current setup is IBasso 150, Magni 3, USB Player Audio Player Pro and the 6xx.
The build is sturdy but the cans need to be taken care of. I don't plan on going down the rabbit hole of chasing audio nirvana as that's not in the budget. The 6xx will be my at home open pair and the DT-770 80 ohm will be the quiet or travel pair. Anything issues in the sound can be tweaked software wise. Are they perfect? No. Are they a very good value? Yes. It's a very good entry point to get in above the over rated marketed headphones that you'll see in the brick and mortar shops.
Would recommend to a friend.
