I know they're not $200 and they're not HD6XXs, but they're on sale. HD 650s for $315 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00018MSNI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_aOY1ybWXWM9F8

I bit the bullet and bought the HD650s from Amazon & have no regrets. With no indication from either Massdrop or Sennheiser if the HD6XXs will ever happen again, you really cant go wrong with the HD650s for $315 with free shipping. Music on Tidal with the HD650s (or the nearly identical HD6XXs) paired with a Schiit Modi Multibit DAC & Vali 2 amp is total ear candy. A much different (better) listening experience for me compared to my old HD598s.
I can't blame anyone for wanting to hold out for the HD6XXs since they are a special edition, but the current $315 price for HD650s on Amazon is a solid deal. The people who managed to join the first drop of the HD6XXs really did get a steal. I may still join any future HD6XX drops if it actually happens again.

I've got a pair of AKG K7XXs that i like, but that i think are unexceptional for daily listening. Any ideas on how they compare?

Can't say that I have any experience with AKG headphones so I really can't tell you anything other than what you can find yourself from other user reviews on Massdrop and other audiophile sites such as Head-Fi.
What I can tell you is that the HD650s are a very smooth sounding set of headphones that I can listen to music and game with all day without any discomfort or fatigue. I honestly don't think anyone can go wrong with the HD600, HD650 or HD6XX as long as you have a good DAC & amp to drive them. The HD600 is a more neutral set of headphones that will give you the most clarity & detail, while the HD650/HD6XX will give you a slightly larger soundstage with better bass response and a warmer & more laid back sound overall. Any of these headphones will be great for daily listening for sure, it mostly comes down to your listening preferences. I highly recommend trying them before buying if possible, or at least buying from somewhere you can easily return if needed.
