What would be a good portable Dac/Amp to use with my HD6xx and Sony Xperia 1 V cell phone?
I am new to this hobby. I purchased a HD6XX and plan to use it with my Sony Xperia 1 V cell phone, that has a 3.5mm jack. I was wondering if I needed a portable dac/amp or just a portable amp and if so what would one recommend? Any assistance one could provide, would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Haz

We have some long-awaited news and are excited to announce it as we celebrate our 5-year anniversary. The Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX heaphones will be available again on Monday, June 26th, 2017 at 6AM PT for $249.99 with free domestic and international shipping.
We will have 7,500 serialized units available for this drop and we understand that there will be questions regarding how we plan on handling the unprecedented demand that was seen last time. We are providing a detailed plan for this drop below.
First Access for Attempted Joiners of the Original Launch During the original launch, there were members who reached the checkout page but were unable to complete their transaction. These people would have secured a unit in the first run and we will be sending an email to these individuals titled “Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX: First Access” inviting them to have the first opportunity to join the drop. Starting Sunday June 25th at 12:00 PM (noon) PT, the members who are part of the first access will see an active drop that they’d be able to join.
All other members will continue to see an inactive drop until Monday, June 26th, 2017 at 6AM PT at which point the drop will become available to all members. Drop Details Each member will be limited to one unit of the HD 6XX. The drop will launch on Monday, June 26th at 6AM PT and will end on Wednesday, June 28th, at 11:59 pm PT. All units sold are expected to be delivered domestically by December 25th. We’ll have an estimated shipping date listed on the drop when we launch.
There has been a change to the countries we’re able to ship to between this drop and the last one. Please see the complete list of countries below (shipping will be free).
Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Belarus, Canada, Switzerland, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Spain, Finland, Faroe Islands, France, United Kingdom, Greece, Croatia, Hungary, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Latvia, Malta, Mauritius, New Caledonia, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Peru, French Polynesia, Poland, Portugal, Reunion, Romania, Serbia, Sweden, Slovenia, Slovakia, Ukraine, United States, Uruguay, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Cyprus, Israel, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey
Serialization All units of the HD 6XX that are produced are uniquely serialized. The first 5,000 were sold in the original launch and the serialization will continue for this drop.
Pricing Change While our goal was to bring the HD 6XX back at its original price, $250 was the most accessible price that Sennheiser made possible for us to provide.
Behind the Scenes There has been a lot of work behind the scenes to make this drop happen. Since the first launch this has been the most requested and talked about drop on the site, and Will has been working with Sennheiser to bring it back for the community. Big kudos to both the team here and Sennheiser for making this drop possible.
Simultaneously, our Engineering team has made many improvements to our transaction processing so that we can fully support the kind of surge in traffic and purchases that occurred during the first launch. We’ve tested these improvements with other launches and they went smoothly.
Given the demand of the HD 6XX, we still expect Monday’s launch to generate unprecedented traffic. While we expect the site to handle this, we’ll still have all hands on deck available to respond to any questions or challenges the community may have.
Of course, the ones putting in the most "behind the scenes" work have been you: the members of the Massdrop community. We’ve seen requests pile up on this drop and have been asked about it through emails and several discussion posts. A big thanks to the entire community for the support and for making this possible.
Edits 1. Edit made to the original post to include free domestic AND international shipping on this drop. 1. Edit made to the original post to include MORE countries where the drop will be shipping.
Thank You.
For average users, I wouldn't recommend hd6xx as you need an amplifier to use it (that's another 100 dollars). If you don't it will sound worse than hd558. Besides hd6xx has 2 wires hanging off from both side so it gets annoying in my opinion.
I would probably just go for hd558 or hd598 (open or closed version doesn't really matter) if you are on budget (can get a good deal sometimes). If you are mixing, go for hd600 (Very neutral sound profile and great sound stage). HD6xx or 650 doesn't excel in many areas. (it has boosted bass... which isn't best for mixing. But more fun to listen to compared to hd600)
But regardless, it is like one of the best headphone to get if you are trying to get into audiophile world :D
Edit: I somehow forgot about the VAT, since I am from Ireland, this than adds 21% to the price tag. Would be very pleased if somehow they can be delivered without being sent to US just so they can be shipped back to Ireland again. Assuming that they will be made in Ireland, and as shipping will be made by Massdrop from New Jersey. Well, wishful thinking was never prohibited... @kunalkumar
From what I understand, the First Access joiners will have priority to buy, thus making it near impossible for anyone else (non First Access) to get their hands on one. 2nd bummer.
Lastly, for the price of the Noble X, this would definitely fit a different role if you already own the Noble X. *at least I have this going for me.* =)
Thanks in advance
I have the HD6XX and as far as I can tell (based on handling and auditioning the HD650 at a bonafide Sennheiser retailer), these are the same built as the HD650.
Unless you can prove with photos of wires hanging, "better plastic" and etc, I hereby debunked your assertions on HD6XX.
Edit: for clarification.
After having the HD6XX for a while, I sold my Audeze EL8O. I prefer the sound from the HD6XX and I would wear it for longer period than the EL8O (heavy, my ears would have hot spots after a while). Plus, I keep going back to the HD6XX to simply enjoy my music.
As for the Noble X, for a dual BA construction, I find the overall sound signature more musical and I totally enjoy listening to it on the go. Sometimes I even use it at home although I have the HD6XX with me.
Recently I tried the Oppo HA-2SE with the Noble X and man, I want to listen to all my music again!
Bottom line, both serve a different purpose and you won't go wrong with either one. Cheers!
The changes are colour scheme and if indeed any plastic has been altered from original to HD6XX, it doesn't make a difference except for those who's bitter it's not priced at $199 and not willing to fork out $249, thus is trolling the existing honest community from buying it.
I've owned the HD 598s for about 8 years or more, and the HD6XX are just better in every way, especially bass. The midrange Is more neutral, the highs are silky smooth and even clearer, and the bass is more impactful, and is better volume wise and clarity. I would recommend these to anyone for $250. Granted I have not listened to the AKG/ Massdrop K7XX or the monoprice m1060s yet, at $200 and $300, so I can't comment there, but I would definitely pay $250 for these.
I don't have experience with freight forwarders myself, but based on what you wrote, I'd say that you both should apply to them separately.
Hope this helps.
Here, have a look at what this guy said about the HD6XX. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE8rccE4wlU
Edit: Included a YT link
thanks~
tx for the answer though
Same goes for China made audio equipment sold on Amazon. It goes on a round trip from China-US-Asia since I'm from Singapore.
if you want cheapest and fastest? get from your ireland authorized dealer. no hd6xx.
Shipping date is a separate matter on itself.
Basically, you'll be paying upfront and will have to wait for your item.
There are a number of third-party cables on the market that offer custom sleeving etc. I'm not sure if they would solve your problem.
Added to the AUD$80 markup and extra differentiators is pretty sad too - especially while keeping the 6ft cable - it's a cute length but considering the original orderers ended up with 2 cables for $199.99 the value for money has taken a serious hit - the HD650's are $387 AUD inc. shipping with local warranty which makes $330.6 for the HD 6XX's only worth it if you're a loyalist - especially given the 6 month wait to ship them.
Keen for your and Will's thoughts - a clear $50 does seem like a Sennheiser cash grab and something Massdrop's ethos was against.
This is basically a machine with moving parts that you wear on your head, whether you think of it that way or not. Stuff wears, gets loose, eventually fails. As with a lot of machines with interchangeable parts which cost something to buy and ship, at some point you will look at it and say, is it really worth it for me to order yet another part given the overall condition? Or just move on and buy another?
Edit: phrasing.
I'm no expert on manufacturing but my guess is the production cost would increase if you break it down into multiple shipments. Hence the need for economy of scale.
And, if it doesn't make sense for you to buy due to wait time or cost, you don't have to. Many others are, and that's the point of such sales.
As they are produced in Ireland(?), will they be shipped from there or from the USA?
It makes all the difference in avoiding tax, customs fees and other costs to have them sent directly from another EU state.
Don't think you'll go wrong with either pair, it comes down to preference.
MD can't and cannot be calculating EVERY region/country's customs tax for EVERYONE.
Not defending MD but sometimes, these expectactions from consumers are ridiculous.
But since you asked this question, you've obviously not been paying attention to the threads or lazy to Ctrl F anything.
Yes, delivery is in Dec 2017. Yes, it's $50 more than before. No, it doesn't ship to EVERYWHERE. Read the description for shipping details. Yes, you will get taxed if your country taxes import from other countries. Yes, this is a ridiculous wait and you can have it delivered faster if buying from Amazon. No, it is not unfair to consumers because if you sign up, you agree to the T&C. No, these HD6XX are not the best headphones but you'll be hard pressed to find any true negative reviews about them. Yes, for $250, you can get many other headphones out there.
Wew! Hope the next Ctrl F will find this!
Reason the longer cable was sent out to first droppers because the short cable was shorter than advertised and as a gesture of goodwill, Senn sent out a longer cable to all.
Edit: There is a list of countries that this drop will ship to in my original post. The shipping for these countries is free.
Just a thought.
Give us from EU some love. USA is not the center of the world you know :).
