Hmmn what headphones to get to keep me satisfied until December? HiFiMan 400i? HD600? I'll most likely get a Schiit stack m2u. May be a portable option too since I also have Grados. Can't wait!! Its going to be a great December!!

HiFiMan 400i while its still 250 is a great choice. HD600 is pointless as you'll have the HD650 in december and it is rather similar, in sound and in price. The HD 650 itself is only 315 on amazon with free one-day (same-day if ordered in early enough morning). Definitely a steal no matter what you do, but HD 6XX and HE400i to hold you over (which will still be different and fun after you have the 6XX) is probably the best option.

based on what i've read, hd600 are more "neutral"? I am leaning more towards the 400i though. The build quality is what I wish the hd650 was. But either way i cant go wrong.

If you get the 400i be sure the actual seller you choose on amazon is HiFiMan which will ensure you get the latest revision.

I've heard both the HD650 and HD 600 back to back. Listening to the soundtrack for "Memoirs of a Geisha." The sound quality of the HD650 is overall what I'd call "better," but less neutral. It feels almost like there's more life to the bass and kick of the drums. But I happen to like a warmer sound overall. The HD600 to me is just a bit too relaxed.
Mind you, you can mod the HD600 with the HD650 cables, and do all sorts of other mods since virtually every part is user serviceable.

I've owned both the hd600 and the hd650, the hd600 are more neutral and more boring

Definitely up to taste. However, I think the most important thing here is that he is already going to have the 6xx(650). It was a "replacement" to the 600 in marketing, and not different enough to recommend someone buy both. However, some decently priced planars like M1060s or HE400i will ensure they are more than just there to hold him over and will still be enjoyable/used come Christmas.

I have HE400i (got by $190) right now. Do you think it worth to buy HD6XX from online (around $270)?
