So I've got a long time to look forward to receiving these...time to research the best headphone amp for them in the ~$200 range. I currently have a Monoprice Desktop DAC/Amp. How well will this drive the HD650s?

I'm in the same boat except I don't even have an amp yet! I was hearing great things about the deepvoice pairing extremely well with this pair. It's dropped right now but not sure if I should just wait till I get the headphones before I start shopping around and tube rolling

The DarkVoice 336SE* (not the deepvoice =D). If you're a newbie, I would recommend a solid state amplifier. Schiit Magni2 / Modi2 is an affordable dac / amp combo that I can reccomend with the 6XX.

Oh jeez haha definitely knew it was darkvoice. not much of a morning person ;)
is there any reason in particular you'd recommend a solid state over tube? I've heard tube amps before, for record player setups, and I really enjoyed the warm and smooth sound they produced. Could be different for headphone setups I suppose. I personally don't have a price limit, but I've heard great things about the DV336SE considering it's price point and output ability.

Don't get me wrong, I own and love the DarkVoice, but there are inconveniences with tube amps. The main inconvenience being the time it takes the tube to warm up to operating temperature (up to 30 minutes in some cases, but usually closer to 20). Also, because of the size and heat production, you are limited to where you can put the DarkVoice. Lastly, the DarkVoice is an OTL amplifier, which is impedence matched for headphones >= 300 Ohm. People say that low impedance headphones can behave strangely if they use the DV as an amp. For those reasons I'd recommend having at least a decent solid state amplifier in your setup before adding a tube amp. That being said I'd recommend the DarkVoice if you think you can deal with the drawbacks.

Fair enough! Appreciate the solid state recommendations, as well. Considering the DV is available outside of massdrop, I won't feel as pressured to "bite the bullet." The magni/modi combo looks pretty sleek. I'll have to keep my eye on it.

Don't worry, Massdrop will drop the DarkVoice again 3 or 4 times before your headphones come =D

I'm very happy driving my HD700 with a Little Dot MK III; with the base tubes it is $245 including shipping to North America and only about $5 more to Europe. I also have a Schiit Magni 2U ($150) and Fulla 2 ($100) both of which should easily drive the 650, though i'm curious to see what the difference in sound is like.
