Any amp and DAC suggestions for these? Seems there's so many options and it's hard to know where the good price to quality bar is. This will be my first set of headphones that would need an amp and DAC. Plan on using this for computer listening (music, gaming, tv/movies) on either Windows or Mac desktop, portability not needed.
My current headphones are the Sennheiser PXC-550's and I love them. I want the 6XX to replace my computer speakers at home, the 550's are for when I'm out or at work.
Most people would recommend an O2/ODAC combo, as the cold sounding signature of this integrated DAC/Amp is well suited to the warm sounding signature of the 6XX. But if you are looking to get the most out of the 6XX you'll need a better amp. These cans have a power handling of 500mW @ 300ohms, so perhaps a Schiit Jotunheim on balanced output would be a better fit for the budget concious.
I would recommend an Audio-GD NFB-11. Absolute best amp for the money.
Gives us facts, details not just hype.
Is FiiO e12 good enough for HD6XX for a portable use?
My personal feel about portability is you must have a DAC component to your portable gear, mainly because the 3.5mm output on your phone is going to be noisy which will end up as distortion when you add an extra amp stage to it. Mind you I haven't changed phones in about 3 years so I have no idea if this is any different now :)
OTOH a DAC & amp in the same small package will always mean you're going to lose out on something, usually the power output of the amp. I've got several FiiO products thanks to my upgradeitis, and I've only found them useful to power my lower end cans that don't require much to sound good.
But then again, having an external DAC or amp will always be better than nothing.
I use the LG V10, which has a Dac, a not bad one. So the result will be the phone's Dac + FiiO e12 amp. Btw, that's only for portable use.
