My first Massdrop purchase. Yeah, the date is months away. But at least we know we'll be gettint one awesome Christmas gift. Ever since i bought a pair of 598's[ began with 201's the 280's, i think there was a 240[?] in between] mye ears awakened to a whole nee world of sound. My desire and taste for rich, full sound in my music also progressed linearly in the equipment i uswd, as i went from a ipod [4th gen] to Zune HD, to PonoPlayer, to an expensive 192khz Asus[ essence(?) ] sound card. Ive been eyeing a pair of 650's to make the jump to the next level from my 598's with balanced cord for the Pono made by SurfCable. Like many o th ers who might cobsider themselves budget limited audiphiles, the steep price point of the 650's is the only thing standing between my auditory desires and the realization of that elusive"next level up" . Needless to say, i am thrilled for the opportunity to make that ascent after indulging in the realm of the 598's and the experience it has to offer. : ) Beyond Excited.

Warder105It's a never ending journey. Sorry about your wallet. You'll probably want a better DAC and AMP at some point.

Panzer17Noob / aspiring audiophile here who also recently purchased the 6XX's. Regarding the DAC/AMP situation - I've been eyeing the Schiit Stack (Magni/Modi - Uber versions). Any advice / suggestions on other options? Thanks!

Warder105i own (happily) hd 598 as well , and i was as well thinking about an improvement. I was looking at hd 599 but this massdrop sale made me change idea and jump in the 650 world.

GenMilesTegThat should probably be fine. There is some argument about how much power is needed to drive it fully to its potential. Magni Uber does something like 320mW per channel, which is probably fine, but some people say up to 500mW is needed. Lots of people use OTL amps which have more power, or use balanced mode which also usually has more power (but you need to re-cable and of course buy a balanced amp).
As for me, I just ordered an audio-gd nfb-29, which has more than enough power, but is quite a bit more expensive than the Schiit stack. Shrug, maybe I will come to regret that in a month or two.

Panzer17Thank you, Panzer. Appreciate the insight. Nothing wrong at all with future-proofing. I'm just getting into the scene and want to make smart / realistic decisions . . . but also not something I regret if I go too far down the rabbit hole. Thanks again.

Warder105I have had both the 598 and the 650. They are worlds apart, the 650s are a huge improvement, the soundstage really opens up, which is the biggest drawback of the 598.

Warder105Congrats! I'm new to Massdrop and Audiophile, but tried them out at the office and they are amazing. I think you made a good choice for your first drop :)

GenMilesTegI recommend an NFB-11 DAC/AMP. I use it with my HD 650 and M1060. You have to wait like a month for it to be shipped from China but I'm loving mine. I believe all together it was $325.

SeijuroThanks a bunch for your suggestion. You're right - the reviews on the NFB-11 are glowing - I'm going to look into that a little more (have a few months until my 6XX's arive). In one review they indicated the only way to order is through contacting the Chinese company via email - is that still true? I'll research more . . including the fact of whether the quality/sound is enough to justify the Chinese build vs. the Schiit American build. Thanks again, Seijuro, for the info. Excited about my new, burgeoning hobby . . .

GenMilesTegNo problem. Yes, you email them and they should get back to you with a few hours and I would email at night since there it's mid-morning. You tell them what you want and they'll send you the price and the Paypal address to send your payment. One month later your stuff will arrive via DHL. Don't let the fact that it's coming from China discourage you. These people make quality stuff and don't have a reputation of screwing people over. Good luck!

SeijuroThe only thing I'm not sure about is the price you pay. Is the price they quote what you pay them or pay to paypal? If it's to them, paypal tacks on more money. If that's the price just going to them, they'll receive less money but you'll pay that exact amount total.
I paid them the amount they quoted, so I paid paypal on top of that. I wonder if that's right. It's not really clear, and they didn't refund me or anything after I paid, although if I overpaid I can dispute it. Wish they'd be a bit clearer on that and respond about that.

Panzer17I just checked my receipt from them. They added a 3.7% Paypal onto the price + shipping and handling bring the total to $337.10. I'm assuming this means they paid the paypal fee and I only needed to have a $337.10 balance for the transaction to go through.

Warder105Sennheiser HD558's did it for me. They don't have the best build quality, but they have outlasted the few pairs I've had since getting them until my Phillip Fidelio X1 arrived. The X1 is nice but don't need an AMP like the HD 6XX will.
