I'm going to use this only as a smartphone headphone for now. My Galaxy s8+ will probably not be sufficient. Any suggestions as to what portable amplifier will suffice for this headphone? Thanks, wally

Wally999Something like a FiiO E10K is a good starting point. If money is no issue, try to go for something like an iFi iDSD Black Label. Battery powered O2 will also work, but it's less portable.

Wally999I'll be using my s8+ mainly also with these headphones. I've been leaning towards picking up the Fiio E17K. Hopefully some more knowledgeable people will respond to this question though.

Wally999Do you realise that these are not designed to be portable headphones? They are open backed, which means that first of all, they don't block any external noise. Secondly and more importantly, because they are open, they leak sound like crazy and in most environments (public transport, school, work) incur the hate of everyone around you.
You mentioned in another post that you've got Sony noise cancelling phones. They are designed to work as portable headphones run direct from your smartphone,l without an amp. The Sennheisers are designed largely for being used at home, with an amp. And there's very little reason to get a portable amp for these.

RockyMountainsExactly, I can't believe the people that buy these and have no clue what they bought. You think you would do a tiny bit of research before spending $200, but that might just be me.

CokemanWell, I'd certainly love to be able to afford drop two hundred dollars on random things without knowing anything about them,
But my inner nerd would still force me to Google them first.

RockyMountainsTo be fair, Massdrop advertises them to be portable travel headphones.

JackulaNot really, to quote the page directly.
" Because the HD 6XX’s open-back design won’t isolate you from outside noise or prevent sound from being heard by those nearby, it may be best-suited for quieter home and office environments. "

RockyMountainsI like to listen to music while relaxing on my (quiet) porch. I just wanted an option to listen with these while sitting outside without an outlet. I am fine listening to them inside also but would like the portable option as well.

CokemanYes, what I meant was there is a disconnect between how they worded it in the description, and the photos.

michaelkelly923These would be fine on the porch. I can't hear my wife taking to me when I'm listening. I use them with an audioquest Dragonfly Black dac/amp with my phone. They work with all types of music. See if you can find a shop nearby to check them out.

RockyMountainsI have used my HD600 in lots of public places. Even on the plane. I did the same thing I tell my 2 year old to do. I was polite. I told the people next to me to let me know if they could here the music from my headphones to let me know...and then I checked in once or twice during the flight to make sure they weren't being bothered. I have never had a problem running my HD600 off my phone jack. Volume was a bit limited and they don't sound as good as with my amp, but perfectly acceptable for the situation. If someone bought these not knowing much about headphones it would probably be one of the best $200 mistakes they could make. I gave up on being an audio snob when I realized that all the gear made me enjoy the music less and not more.

JimmybucketsJust out of curiosity, how did more gear make you enjoy music less? And are there any other headphones you'd advise to buy within a similar price point other than the K7xx?

HOROGIt just became more about trying to make the music/sound perfect. I started to be more concerned with my set up than why I got the set up to begin with. Honestly I have not really done a tone of back to back comparisons. Most of my experience has been with high end 2 channel stereo. I just know I haven't heard anything that really blew the HD600 out of the water for the $$$ so I have stuck with them. I decided to get the HD6xx because I wanted similar sound with more bottom end.

Wally999Hahaha these aren't That kind of headphones. These are the kind professional Youtubers use in their weekly videos, and audio engineers use when creating a new song. But if this is what you're interested in, just don't be surprised if you're in someplace like NYC and the loud traffic is making your music hard to hear.

michaelkelly923 Just got a a Topping NX1s amplifier, they did raise the volume and clarity on my SHP9500 by about 30 percent in my Headphone. Keeping my spirits up for the Senns. Due to my living arrangements i can't have a add a home stereo set-up.

CokemanThe picture of the girl, is clearly outside. And the picture of them hanging on someone's bag, somewhat suggests portability. Some might say that is just for modelling purposes, but it paints a picture that does match with how these are ideally listened to. Do you agree?

ChooseToRideThose photos are clearly supposed to confirm that the new colour scheme is appropriate for those blessed with auburn hair, or those who like to accessorise with leather manbags!

JimmybucketsI had the same experience with home Hi-Fi. When my 2nd amp died I sold my gigantic speakers and bought a couple of Sonos Play:5s set-up as a stereo pair (with my turntable). I'm listening to, and enjoying loads more music now because it's so easy!

ChooseToRideThe photos are for marketing purposes only and are to make the merchandise look attractive; the photos have no other purpose than that. You have to decide if its appropriate to use a large headphone outdoors that leaks all of its sound out and doesn't fold up in any - use your own best judgement.

ChooseToRideIdeally listened to outside? Yah that's a no. Solid no. KJ741N has got it right. They are trying to make the product more attractive while hiding behind the words in the post saying that they should be used in a quiet environment. Plus, I wouldn't be caught dead walking around the world with these on. I joined this drop because I love good audio, but when I'm portable I understand you make sacrifices (such as not toting around huge ugly cans) so that you don't look like an idiot. That's just me though and this was not meant as a personal attack. I'm just saying that for portable I would rather sacrifice a little sound quality for less ugly cans that are closed to the environment. Don't know how that guy took these on a plane. I can barely hear noise cancelling Bose headphones on a plane properly and I'm 20 years old (the plane still ruins the quality of most music even with noise cancelling, isolated headphones).

notagloveIf there were pictures of a camp stove being used inside a non ventilated camping tent on here because it made it more attractive, would that be okay? No. In the example of the headphones, it's going too far to say they are misrepresenting how the product should be used. So the camp stove comparison is a gross exaggeration. But, is there some responsibility for advertisers to portray their product being used in an ideal environment, where the product works best? I would say that it is not only doing what's right, it's in the companies best interest. It leaves less room for customers to be disappointed in how a product ends up working in the real world. Either way, you summed it up and I agree with your reply though. I may be getting a too caught up in how I feel the product could have been shown being used in the photos. I guess they could have at least included a photo of someone using them in a bank vault with a bunch of money around them. That would probably still look cool and be a very quiet environment. Anyway, sounds like these are going to be awesome. I currently have a pair of (closed) Status Audio CB-1's as my "nicest". They have been great. So, I'm excited to see what these can do.

ChooseToRidehonestly I may have misinterpreted your position in this conversation. I thought you were saying that the these pictures were representative of what Massdrop thinks we should do with them. My bad. Now I see you meant that Massdrop has a responsibility to portray their products in the ideal use conditions to avoid purchaser disappointment. I agree with that and I apologize for my comments earlier. I thought you were trying to say it was recommended to use them in an outdoor setting. I might have blended your comment with someone else's, sorry.
