mmf1I got the email on Oct 28th with a tracking number for DHL Global mail. However, I can't track it yet using the DHL site. I get this: No "We wish to inform you that a number of packages may experience delayed or missing tracking information. Continue to check this tracking page for the latest update. Please accept our sincere apology for any inconvenience this may cause."
So maybe I won't get any tracking information at all. The webpage says that it will be delivered by the "local delivery vendor", so maybe Canada Post?

RakcomI haven't gotten mine shipped, but do you get any information from the courier as to how much they are charging you for the tax and duty fee? I had mine originally shipped to Toronto but since they are shipping it early, I told them to change it to Ottawa as I will still be doing my law school at Ottawa due to the earlier shipping date. Kinda sad that its DHL, I heard their fee is brutal vs fedex

mmf1A small update for everyone, the DHL tracking page took 4 days to finally show something. Once the information shows up at the DHL tracking page you can see there's a Canada Post tracking number as well. The number is valid but with no tracking information yet because the headphones are still in the US.

Raikozyif you open on a desktop computer, the number is to the right of the blue sign that says "en route". There's a box with numbers for "DHL eCommerce #", "Customer Confirmation" and "Delivery by CA Post". That's the one you're looking for. After the CA Post number there's also "Weight 4.0077 lbs", "Service DHL Parcel Intl Direct".
Just for the sake of sharing more details so you guys know what to expect. I haven't received any new tracking updates since october 31st (shipped oct 28). DHL says it is en route with last movement "Oct/31 Secaucus, NJ, US PROCESSING COMPLETED AT ORIGIN". Canada Post has a unique status "Oct/31 Electronic information submitted by shipper". Somewhere else in the page it says "Once the shipment arrives in our facility, tracking status and the expected delivery date will be updated."

Nov 3, 2017
RakcomHmm okay thanks for the info. Based on my calculation, we were charged 263 cad. After tax, it becomes 297 meaning that 34 bucks is tax. The extra 10 bucks is cod, either custom or broker. That isn't bad actually although I rather keep that 10 bucks to myself.
Raikozy

Nov 3, 2017
mmf1If you look at your 6xx invoice, they haven't charged us tax. So the broker or the duty is 10 bucks. Based on my research, there shouldn't be any duty because headphone is category 5 in NAFTA and shouldn't have any duty fee. 10 bucks is broker probably

WanderingPsyduckWhich province do you live? Also what headphone did you previously own (I have 598 se). Do you have a dac or amp? (I don't have any although my macbook pro 2017 has an extremely good and clean dac, so I don't need any. Amp I do need. I left my desktop back home at toronto for like 1-2 years and that has 600omh capable dac, but its not currently with me atm.

WanderingPsyduckAh I see. I will most get charged the same amount then. Mine was shipped on the 31st, but it still stuck at "processing completed at origin" at Secaucus NJ since 2pm yesterday. Its probably on the way, but it hasn't crossed the border yet as I haven't received any more update to my CanadaPost other than the electronic shipping label that they have created.
RaikozyYeah, I had same status last night then everything was done this morning. It's likely it's already in Canada. They just don't update the status until everything is done I think.

Nov 4, 2017
WanderingPsyduckhaha that is very weird indeed but makes total sense at the same time. Can you notice the difference between plugging the headphone straight to the audio jack vs using e10k? I am thinking of just running it through my macbook pro 2017 for like 2 months (live in Ottawa right now). I am going back in 2 months and my Main PC rig does have proper dac and 600ohm capable dac. With my hd598, I can't tell the difference much between plugging it on mac or my PC, although I can tell small differences like more pronounced on all aspects but very small. I think bass and a tad higher loudness are the easiest thing to identify.

Raikozy I hope, I‘m researching it now, $10 applies only if it’s not USPS to Canadapost, which I would assume it isn’t? They have an agreement to waive each other’s brokerage fees.
Bluebird55

Nov 4, 2017
Bluebird55From what I can gather, headphones or many other electronics are not charged duty, just HST, and any other sales tax you would pay normally if you bought the product in your province. If it’s not shipped USPS, a $10 fee will also go on top of that. Also figured it is worth mentioning, CDs and LPs, any form of recorded music is duty applicable.

legghey, so I assumed yours have arrived? Mine is coming tomorrow. I noticed that it has card for pickup label on my item. Are you familiar with that? WanderingPsyduckmy goodness this is sucks. I was notified by CP that note was left in my house at 8 in the morning. My class started early today so I told someone in my house to check for it. But there was nothing, not in the mailbox, not in the door....I don't know what to do now. Also, based on the tracking website, I am wondering if they even aware of my address or that they just know my postal code (which is so wrong cuz there are 6 houses assigned with the same postal code). I am coming home in 2 hours and hopefully I can sort this problem out.
Update: I decided to call CP customer support and they gave me the code for the delivery card and the location. Fewhhh...

Raikozy
15
Nov 10, 2017
WanderingPsyduckIf you are just talking about amps, o2 and magni 2 would be more or less equal. The thing is, the new magni 3 has a new architecture + topography and in terms of power, it is even more powerful than magni 2 uber, which is crazy. That certainly means that the amp will be able to handle 6xx no problem, even on those 600ohm frequency spikes. I would say get magni 3 instead of o2. Again I am just talking about performance in the paper. Mine hasn't actually arrived yet lol. It ended up costing me 160 bucks though (currency exchange + 25 bucks shipping). THe good thing is, they ship it very quickly (same day), and I am using the cheapest USPS courier and they ship it with plane from LA.

WanderingPsyduckMagni 3 just gets into the low end of the power range I recommend for HD6xx. O2 is too weak.
I'd still say to save your pennies and buy a better amp over the Magni3 though. It will get the job done, but there are other, better, amps out there IMO, but you may feel differently.

Any that stand out and wont break the bank too much?

CorinthI hear good things about the Aune T1 SE mk3. Given that it has a decent DAC built in, $250 isn't a bad deal. I'm not sure what it shows up on massdrop for. In the ballpark for, that's my best recommendation. Beyond that I really need to know how much you consider breaking the bank, and if you're willing to build something yourself to make a better recommendation.

HeeftyI am looking to spend 300-400 tops. Would be stoked to get a good rig under $300. I am not a massive audiophile after the next marginal improvement, however I do listen to a lot of music and am willing to spend a bit more for the best experience/ price paid. What I do regret is buying entry level stuff and wanting to upgrade later on.
Currently, been considering stuff like the M3/M2U, M3/Mimby, O2/Odac, JDL Element, Schitt Jot (though this one is at the higher end of price range) or even the CTH + SDAC. There are just so many differing opinions (and i know many due to diff tastes), I just want to get the right one.
In terms of future headphone upgrades, when my k7xx/t-x0 dies, I will be looking into possibly a m1060 or a Purpleheart... definitely not looking into Hi end at $1000+. So I am assuming my price range of $300-400 will be sufficient for these as well.
Thanks so much for your response!

CorinthI didn't mention the SMSL VMV VA2 in my last post. Don't know how I missed that. I know it's quite good and isn't outrageously expensive, though I understand it won't drive current hogs so keep that in mind if you're using planars.
In my opinion, you should probably weigh a bit more heavily the Jotunheim. It's the cheapest thing that I'd consider an end game amp. You might never buy another amp after it. That's not to say that it's the best, but I don't think you're going to find anything that it won't be able to manage. It's also the best thing Schiit has ever made, IMO. Anything less I have a hard time recommending since you'll probably end up wanting to upgrade later on. I won't think you will with the Jotunheim.

Nov 13, 2017
HeeftyHi mate, thanks for the response. Yeah okay, definitely looking more into the Jot now.
However this may be a noob question... to get the most out of the "Balanced" amp/ "balanced" dac that the Jot offers, I will need to mod my headphones (k7xx and fostex t-x0) to have XLR inputs to both drivers? Is that correct? Or is it just a matter of a simple adapter cable that converts the 3 inch jack our from the headphones to the two XLR outputs of the amp?
Heefty
1387
Nov 14, 2017
CorinthI'd just use the single ended output for those. There's no such thing as an adapter to convert from single ended to balanced. Think of it as something to grow into.
If you want to get brave and start modding your cans, yes, you'll need to separate the returns from each driver to run them with the balanced output. It's not a requirement though, if for no other reason than that they were not designed to be used in a balanced configuration (hence the need for extensive mods). The headphones most likely have the return wires soldered together in the housing but if not there, in the cable. It might not be hard to separate them, but if you do you're looking at defining which type of connector to use on the headphones themselves and building your own cables for whatever you use.
The chances of you noticing the difference between the balanced output and the single ended are not great. It really only makes a difference when you have very long cables and/or very difficult cans to drive. The main benefit is that it doubles the output power of the amp (since there's actually 2 driving your cans now...) and you can resolve any concerns there by making sure that your SE amp is powerful enough for your cans from the start. I'm sure there will be "balanced" fans coming after me for saying that it's not all it's cracked up to be though.
Corinth
22
Nov 14, 2017
HeeftyOne final question... so even when only using the single ended output on the Jot, you would say the improvement in quality and value is worth the extra $150-$250 over the M3/M2U or M3/Multibit?
Really appreciate your answers! They have been a great help.
