without an amp, does it loud enough to hear?
Loud enough to hear? Probably...but it would distort the sound. Really depends what you plug them into but this is true as a general rule with most battery powered players, most laptops and cheaper PC sound cards/on-board audio.
These cans don't need much power to work but they do need good voltage which you won't have without a decent amp. Get one not powered by USB cable as that's usually not enough.
Edit: note the distortion might not be so easy to identify directly unless you have heard the cans with/without an amp so you might think they sound OK until you get a chance to listen to them amped.
how bad is the distortions? i mean if ignore the price difference, does it still sound better then those cheaper headphones that don't required an amp? lets say hd598 vs hd6xx both no amps, which one sound better?
The HD 6XX will sound better, only if you listen very loudly the bass will start to lack because smartphones don't put out enough voltage. But you won't run into any issues if you keep to responsible listening levels.
What Horten says is right but I personally found the sound fatiguing when listening directly from my laptop jack and my PC on-board jack.
Maybe it's to do with the fact that I am increasing the volume slightly to compensate for the lack of bass and typical veiled sound.
I have to say that I prefer to listen on lower volumes and with my amp I can listen for hours without the same level of ear fatigue.
Yes, but you should definitely get one later if u can’t afford it now.
Hi there! I've used my pair for a couple of weeks before I bought an amp. Yes, they're pretty good without an amp, and yes, they go loud enough. But as someone else already pointed out, the bass will be quite lacking, which already is an 'issue' (the bass is just 'realistic', a lot of music sounds great with exaggerated bass, that's why I call it an 'issue'). So no, you don't need it, but if you want to unlock its full potential, I'd recommend you buy an amp. I've got the Fiio E10K, it's reasonably priced (€80), especially for people in Europe who have to pay high taxes on massdrop products.
And oh, they will sound better than a pair of HD598s, the difference will just be smaller (but still quite notable).
