looking for an amp in the 150 dollars range.. any suggestions anyone? thanks!
Take a look at the Schiit line. Quite affordable and well made.
the amp and dac is costing me more than the headphone itself, is that normal?
The headphones are cheap to begin with, so if you take into account that they are exactly the same as a MSRP $500 model it should be pretty normal. I'd say you should spend as much as you're comfortable with taking into consideration that there's diminishing returns the higher up you go.
I have some Sony MDR's that cost me like $100 on a bargain bin, and so far I've spent over 500 on equipment for them. And I don't regret a cent.
Also, those Schiit magicians punch way above their weight. They're truly nice amps.
Which amp/dac combo should I get? Budget of 200$ max. Should I opt for the Magni Modi 3, Fulla 2 or the O2 Odac?
Hey dude, I have no idea on how the O2 sounds so i can't comment on it. But i would recommend the stack over thefulla . It's more versatile in the headphones you can drive, and you can really tell the difference in sound between them. The fulla is incredible as a mobile option, but for your home you can't go wrong with the stack.
The O2 sounds.... Analytic. It doesn't have a sound signature like other amps. I'm undecided whether is that a good thing or not.
Thanks for info. I feel its more normal i am spending same on equipment as headphone now.
I have never really liked the analytic sound signature, as I find it too tiring for my tastes. I found the Vali 2 amp to be more to my liking. I guess its just a very personal preference.
I haven't tried a tube amp before, so I can't say much about that.
I think for the O2, it will take some time for me to get used to it.
