Schitt Magni 3 or Asgard 2?
Never heard an Asgaurd 2. I do know they have a nicer feeling volume pot and a bigger chassis. But from everything I read (including some things from Jason at Schiit), the Magni 3 sounds as good/better, and the Asgard 2 is due for a refresh...or due to be dropped because of the Jotenhiem. Not sure what they will do.
One thing is for sure, the Magni 3 can power ANYTHING. And it sounds great to my ear. Just be nicer to have a better volume knob/pot....but that's a TINY nit. It's a fantastic product for $99 USD.
Yeah, been trying to decide between those 2 for a while. I heard the Asgard 2 was better than Magni 3, but I know Magni 3 is an amazing bargain for its price, especially since Asgard costs more.
You might as well spend another $150 and get a Jotenheium and a balanced cable for the 6xx vs going Asgard 2.
Then would it be neccesary to get a Modi 2 with a Magni 3?
edit: Sorry I didn't answer your question. You don't HAVE to get a MODI or any dac with the Magni..you could get a 3.5mm to RCA cable and go directly from a line out on your computer/player to the amp. However having a Modi/discreet DAC is a noticable sound upgrade over anything your computer can do.
You could get a Fulla 2, those can be a DAC (sounds about as good as the $99 modi in line out mode) and use that for everything right now. Then if you need better sound, start buying more upgrades like the Magni. I am a fan of the Fulla 2 and I would suggest you start there...it will not be a waste of $99.
If you opt for the Jotenheium, you can get the balanced dac module for $99 extra..the same price as the lowest priced Modi. It is a hardware balanced DAC with a considerabily better signal to noise ratio then the low-end Modi.
So if you opt for the +DAC option on the Jotenheium, then no, you would not need a Modi.
I agree that the Magni 3 is an amazing bargain. It is. No where can you get such beast for $99.
According to Schiit, what was going to be the Asgard 3 ended up being the Magni 3, because the Asgard 2 is as Asgardy as the Asgard line can be. It's as good as it can get. So the Magni 3 is a different amp and you can see that in the topology description and the specs. It's the stronger amp power-wise, but sound-wise, it's up to one to determine which sounds "best". I have the Asgard 2 and I think it sounds beautiful enough that I have no desire to go up the food chain, even though...really...I'm tempted to go all out on the Schiit scale just to see how much better they get. But yeah, the Asgard 2 is lovely to my ears. It's a space heater, but a beautiful-sounding one!
I've had an Asgard 2 for a couple years and I think it's got a very even very cohesive sound... A lot of cheap SS amps do some things better but drop the ball elsewhere. Heh, I'm actually looking to move down to a Magni 3 tho...
I got a really nice tube amp last year that I'm happy with as an upgrade for music listening, but I'd like to keep using something SS for long gaming sessions (less tube wear, less heat - I live in the tropics)... Asgard 2 is taking a bit too much desk space solely for that purpose tho.
