Hi everyone from the conmunity, just a simple question: for those who tried the sennheiser 6xx and the hifiman he-4xx, which headphones would i choose because of its sound quality? I want to know also which of these two sound more naturally. I'd be glad if someone who experienced these pairs could explain me. Thanks.

TheAudiophileProphetThe HE-4xx is a very clear headphone, with impactful bass and slightly emphasized highs. A very good headphone at that. The 6xx has more 'rumble' to the bass, but with less extension and a thicker, 'goopier' syrup-like sound. Both are incredibly good in their own regards, but the 6xx are more easy on the ears.
dnalekawOh, well i think that's enough to interpret the sound quality. With rumble, you mean the high-end bass to be boomy, don't you? Well i was afraid of the price offered by Massdrop: $169. If I'm granted to buy a well-built planar magnetic headphone at that price, congratulations to me hehe. Anyway, thanks a lot for the reference. I hope to enjoy these pair of headphone (he-4xx) when tested.

TheAudiophileProphetYes, they don't have much sub-bass. You can't go wrong with either. Are they for a certain purpose like gaming, or are they just for listening?

TheAudiophileProphetI had both and chose the Sennheisers. The main reason is that every time I put on the Hifiman I had to get used to sound for 15 minutes and with the Sennheiser it is on point right away. They sound so natural which no headphone could match to which I have listened to so far. So it is perfect for vocal/guitar based music. But it does not fall apart when listening to EDM either. It is a great allrounder. The Hifiman is more detailed, faster and has more subbass as mentioned before. Perfect for heavy rock, EDM, hip hop, etc. But it leaves something to desire with more acoustical music. I hope this helps and that I am not to late;)
Wolffi90123Wow, i was thinking about the sound signature of the Sennheiser's. It tends to sound more natural according to all the reviews i saw about the hd 6xx. I was wondering to buy the he-4xx because they're planar magnetic headphones, a technology i've never tried though. I was very obsessed with that bargain but I remembered promising myself to buy a sennheiser's when i get the money. Both have a very respected sound signature, and i like more subbass but less high bass, because if so the sound tends to get muddy and boomy, so it doesn't sound natural and neutral. So i was checking the frequency response wave form of the hd 6xx, and it seems to appear almost neutral, so i would like to experimental something close to that.
I have another question, is it worth buying, as a cheaper alternative to the hd 6xx, the hd 58x jubilee headphones? And i also want to know which of these -hd 6xx, hd 58x, he-4xx- behaves better with retro music, I mean those from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, reaching the 90s and 2000s. I would appreciate the help. Thanks!

TheAudiophileProphetThe feeling I had with the Hifiman is that they just put a great driver in a simple housing without much thought. (Which is reasonable for this price though). I did not burn them in completely before selling them (my phone broke). But it had this weird dip in the middle frequencies which made is sound lifeless because vocals and guitars did not cut through the mix. Another thing is that they are extremely susceptible to sound signature changes when leaning your head against a headrest or something similar. (This is even better noticable when you place your hand against the cups). As the HD650 (HD6xx) was Sennheiser's flagship headphone for years. They put some proper thought in to the driver placement, structure, etc. (But still not 100% perfect, as the KISS mod exists which claims to make them almost godlike (somehow)). The HD58x has the same build as the 600/650/660s and has the driver structures like the new 660s. (Which is not proven). So my guess is that is has a lot of the same qualities as the 660s. But that they have tuned it differently. As the sound is tuned to the old HD580, I guess it will be fairly bright with a subtle amount of bass. But it is all guessing as there are not a lot of reviews yet.
So my personal ranking would be: 1:HD6xx 2:HD58x 3:HE4xx
This is all sound based (very personal). Comfort wise they are pretty equal.

TheAudiophileProphetBefore I forget, they are all great allrounders. The Hifiman and Sennheisers sound good with modern (bass heavy?) music as well as Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Radiohead, etc. (Listened to all those bands with them)
dnalekawListening. I was analising the frequency response of the 6xx, and I think they are almost neutral, compared to the he-4xx. Nonetheless, I can't afford the hd 6xx, although i wish to try them. So I was thinking on the he-4xx or the hd 58x jubilee. Both are darker than the hd 6xx, so i'm worried about that. I don't want a poor treble performance, so I'm torn between those.
Wolffi90123So I guess you haven't tried the 58x jubilee for yourself. Well, i was analising the frequency response wave from the hd 58x jubilee and it does get a little similar to the hd 650 at 90 dBSPL. What it worries a little to me is the treble performance. I don't want them to have a mediocre treble performance as my Sony MDR-XB450B1 (i ought to calibrate them to have less bass because they sounded too boomy and muffled). Also, i can't afford the hd 6xx. So i'm torn between the 58x jubilee and the he-4xx.

TheAudiophileProphetNo one has tried the HD58x yet because it is a completely new headphone which is not made yet. Only a few YouTube reviewers had the chance. Sony is known for their "dark" headphones. I have one myself. I like it a lot but as you said, sometimes it is too boomy. The HD6xx is also considered a "dark" headphone. Although for me it had more than enough treble and is not boomy at all. The HD58x should have a bit more sparkle. If you do not like muffled sound I would not get the HE4xx. Because it has a dip at a very critical point. So I would take the gamble with the HD58x as Sennheiser is very trustworthy. But you will have to wait a few months before you receive them.
Wolffi90123Seriously, noone? Oh i though they were shipping the units as the first drop has finished. Well, as Jude from Head-Fi has reviewed these headphones and, if i don't get wrong, he said they're comparable between the hd 580 precision, hd 580 jubilee and the hd 600. Also, figuring out from the video made by the channel Unbox Therapy on Youtube about the hd 820, Lewis tried the hd 58x jubilee and he said they sounded great. After all, I'll take the risk and buy the hd 58x jubilee, also it's 20 bucks less than the he-4xx. I hope not to be disappointed then hehe.

TheAudiophileProphetDon't forget the long waiting time on the HD58X. If I remember correctly they will be shipping somewhere around june
Wolffi90123"July", bradr said it was the ETA. https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-sennheiser-hd-58x-jubilee-headphones/talk#discussions
Yeah, I'm getting convinced about buying these headphones. The only is that now i'm out of money. So I'm trying to convince my dad to buy them as an introduction to audiophile's world. I beg the units sold don't reach quickly the 2250, now they're about 2010. Anyway, thanks for letting me know about these headphones. Greetings!

TheAudiophileProphetI don't think either can be compared based on SQ. They are both different types of headphones. The Sens are dynamic and the Hifis are magnetic planar. If you're looking for more detail and analytical headphones, the HE-4xx is the choice. If you're looking for comfort, smoother sound, and a more natural feeling soundstage then the 6xx is the pick. HE-4xx makes the vocal reproduction and instruments sound more natural, but they are very heavy and I can't wear them longer than an hour without having to take a pretty long break. The 6xx on the other hand has a much more natural soundstage at the cost of very little detail, but shine with vocals(especially women's vocals) and horns. The 6xx also have some comfort issues at first with clamp force, but that loosens up in about a month or so. Weight never goes away though. I would pick the 6xx over the he4xx everyday just because of comfort and the soundstage and smoothness makes the music feel so much more natural than the detail he4xx provide.
