I received mine this week and for the life of me can't understand what is so impressive about them. Nothing pops and everything sounds meh! I have to put the DAC (Fiio E10K) on high gain AND bass boost to have an even slightly enjoyable listening experience because they are so bland. I even plugged them into my Onkyo TX-NR5009 to see if it was that my DAC was insufficient. Even still a completely unremarkable experience. My old HD 202 sound comparable. My Game Zero headphones are more comfy. I know I will get flak for this, but my Icemat Audio Siberia headphones kick these in the ass. The build is certainly of high quality aside from the short, cheap looking, plastic cable. All I can say is that it certainly came in a nice box. Perhaps I received a defective pair, but this wasn't a worthwhile purchase. Not sure I will buy from Massdrop again.

samunoz1These are monitoring headphones. Everything is going to be neutral. I hear you, they are amazing for sure. Yet not for people who enjoy a good hard bass. I still want them though :p

samunoz1E10K really doesn't have enough power for these, so the performance will suffer. Your type of sound seems to be the "fun" V-shape sound, unfortunately the HD6XX won't have this regardless of how you tweak them, these headphones are designed with realism in mind and has a fairly flat frequency response. I wouldn't call them monitoring headphones though, they are a bit too dark and slow for monitoring.

samunoz1I have the exactly same impression as yours for the first time. I also thought it was a defective unit or whatever because I never use any high-end or neutral headphone before so I have no idea what it should sounds like. And here I thought my bassy headphone were the best. I really don't understand the "hype" during that time.
But it took me a few weeks to get used to the sound signature. After that, you can't go back to normies headphone. I even go as far of buying a "tube amp" but my version was hybrid tube that is Bravo Ocean. Pretty good budget tube amp. I can say, this headphone really love tube amp. I used E10k as DAC and Bravo Ocean as amp

samunoz1 I have been trying to find the right word to do these cans justice. I think I have a better word the the euphemisms of realism, neutral and monitor. That word is ... uninspired. My flagship Onkyo receiver has a 192kHz/32bit Burr-Brown DAC and the headphone jack use the same amp that powers my 9 speakers. So it can easily power these headphones. Yet the same material sounds exactly the same as on my FIIO E10K so its not the portable DAC/AMP. Its these uninspired headphones.

Receivers are notorious for having terrible headphone amps, they are designed for speaker amplification and use the same speaker amplification circuit to drive headphones. The headphone jack on your Onkyo flagship receiver is for convenience, although you'll have power on tap, the power mismatch leads to high noise and impedance mismatch leads to high distortion. The headphone output from your Onkyo receiver would be as good as your E10K, maybe worse.

samunoz1I also tried Yamaha rx-v371 receiver as amp before deciding to buy a headphone amp(vali 2), it is much better to me but looks like you don't like "flat" headphones, they say these are even less "fun" than the hd600 because it has a warmer top end, but that can be solved with equalization.

Nader45I am hoping this is a break-in period issue. I have been using them for about 8 hours a day for a weeks so far. I listen to music while working and use it for phone calls as well.

samunoz1I thought the same at first, i switched back to old dt880 for a listen, before i appreciated the hd6xx even more, but imo they're unlistenable without eq, it brings out the headphone, unless you just like classical, without it sounds so thin, but first look for an amp.

samunoz1Hey it sounds like an amplification issue. These aren't the hardest headphones to run, but they do need a good amount of oomph to get them sounding just right. I usually run these off of an amp rated for 600 ohm output. They sound thin if run on anything rated under 300 ohm. One suggestion is run them over to your local (real) hifi shop and ask if you can demo a few headphone amps with them. They will have some suggestions.
