After having it a few weeks, I must say that even though the first experience with the headphones wasn't as mindblowing as I imagined, the detail, especially in the bass, has really grown on me. One of the best tracks I used to compare, was 'Golden Brown' by The Stranglers. The bass guitar sound muddy and it's hard to hear when a new note on the bass guitar is being played on my ATH-M40x, but on the HD6xx I can hear the individual notes in the bass extremely clearly.
Than the instrumental seperation... boy, it's a lot better than the M40x headphones. Especially noticable on tracks like 'Ninty-Nine and a Half' by Creedence Clearwater Revival, 'Keep Your Hands to Yourself' by The Georgia Satellites or 'I'd Love To Change The World' by Ten Years After, which makes sense of course because it's double the price, but overall, I'm impressed by these. I can recommend it to anyone seeking to improve their setup, and currently have a sub 100$US / 90 EUR pair of headphones like I did!
Well, they definitely are mid-fi audiophile headphones for enjoying your music/movies/etc, and well-regarded since the (HD650) initial release. So comparing those 2 is hardly ideal, but glad you like them. The m40x on the other hand is considered a budget studio monitor which is less than ideal for soundstage, separation, etc. Never could quite understand the hype behind the M40/50 headphones. I own the M50s and of all the headphones I've owned and auditioned over the years, the M50 is at the absolute bottom. Sadly most people entering this hobby will pick them up, convinced they are the best headphones for everything and every genre. So many choices out there for the $
I had a pair of M50s for about a year and I ended up giving them away.
Mine are sitting on a shelf. I need to sell or give them away
I'm waiting on these headphones but I just cued up Golden Brown on Spotify, which I'd never heard. I'm listing on my Audio-Technica DSR7BDs, which have great separation. I can see why you use this song for your comparison.
Agree! My m50x are best used for listening to audio books in bed...lol
